The clang, click and clack
beyond the clear of sheer glass
as a new day of toil awakens
to the perk of bean and the fry of yellow
sunny sides.....

A drip falling into the sound of itself,
rounding it’s way to an endless drain
of sewer’s maze....as rats scurry for
a hurried meal before the shimmer of light
casts through the grate. Footfalls
sound a waking call to the newspaper
clad pair of shoes with no name..

Mere sounds of the bustle before the hustle
of life takes a frantic dash to the waiting
hiss of steam,   electric rails and whirring
doors in a maze of steps...as mere boys
con for a dime, an old man shakes a
pewter cup and the fragrance of delicate
lace touches the noses of the few who
stop long enough to smell the rose..
before the door closes and
another drip falls into a
rusting drain....

"A drip falling into the sound of itself"

that will be one of my all-time favorite lines of all poems I've read.
Liked this a lot.

You are just so very artful in your imagery, Barry.
I could almost feel this with all senses.
Excellent!

Interesting twist you write here. At first I thought I was in for a mellow morning breakfast, but alas reality set in and the rat race of life began.
Enjoyed, now how about breakfast?
