Stop! Whip! Ow! They lashed me with their tongue! How long a tongue they have! They use it so to bash and smash and calmly snipe and trash. Whip! Stop! Ow! They stabbed me with a word! It's not supposed to hurt because they calmly always blurt how much their love is worth. Whip! Stop! Ow! They lash me once again while trying to pretend that when they do (they always do) they are my dearest friends. |

Yes, and with a friend like this, who needs an enemy? I've done it and it has been done to me. Great lesson here, and good reminder how sharp tongues can be, no matter the good intention, (or, evil one.) Before taking a comment personally, I try to consider the source, first, now...and I would hope others do as well. I like this poem, and also the variety of form you post and so many different themes. Warm Regards, Pat ..without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.. |

Radrook, words can really hurt sometimes, can't they? Sometimes, though, they aren't intended to hurt. My Mom always told me that if you can't say something nice about someone, to not say anything at all. I think this would also apply to what we say to others. But, I'm sorry to say that I haven't always heeded my Mother's teachings. Wish I had, though, because once words are spoken, they can't be taken back. Being verbally abused myself in the past, I know how bad words can hurt and what scars they can cause. Well, I certainly didn't plan to "say" all these words, but your poem kind of touched something in me. Thanks for sharing these wise words with us. Thanks for the feedback. Yes, there are times when love requires that we tell others things that they might perceive as hurtful. So it is not always with bad intentions that we verbally hurt someone. What I had in mind was something said which would be inexcusable. Such as telling someone that his newborn is ugly--for example. Or humorously mentioning how a former spouse must be living it up intimately with her new boyfriend. Or downplaying someone's educational efforts as being something insignificant. Little comments of that nature from someone who is always saying how careful he or she is in not hurting our feelings because they love us. Glad you enjoyed. God bless! most of the time it is just self serving to hurt others with words... like making themselves feel better by putting others down... yes there are times when you need to speak the truth as a true friend for what ever reason you may feel the need but word abuse is the hardest of all to get rid of in our heads... like a tape that plays over and over |
