I've got a Southern drawl
I talk so very slow
I like to use words like "ya'll"
though other words I know
Some say my voice sounds sweet
others say it's sophisticated
I think it's kinda neat
this drawl the South created
I was born in Alabama
Florida's where I grew up, though
I talk kinda like my Mama
definite Southern roots I show
"Where you from", folks ask me
when my drawl they hear
I just say I'm from the South, you see,
'cause both states are sort of near
Both states show "Southern hospitality",
All the South has this fine trait
We may talk with certain originality
but, I've learned to think it's great
Us folks down here have lots of fun
lots of happy people are found
A question often asked is "Have you heard
a good one?"
lots of jokes always going around
Our jokes you ought to hear
they would be funny to ya'll
You'd grin from ear to ear
Hearing 'em told with a Southern drawl

Not sure if I still have a southern drawl or if I just sound like a hick...lol.  I grew up in Alabama but with very northern roots.  Made for a mixed up kid and a real laid back adult.  Who's in a hurry, anyway?  Thanks for the moment of memory.

That's right, Duncan, who's in a hurry? People
have all the modern conviences now, but don't ever
have time to sit on the porch or out in the yard
and just visit with neighbors anymore.
Thanks for reading and replying.

Hey, thanks, nice to see someone defending the way we Southerners speak. LOL

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn

I think southern drawls are charming, Ethel... and I bet you are too!
I live in Michigan and everyone is always surprised to hear my NY accent... but I grew up in NYC,  so I talk very fast... just the opposite of you.
My mother lives in Miami... and it seems that everyone down there has an NY accent because they all migrated from NY... so even though they are about as far south as the USA gets... they talk like NY...
Accents are fascinating...
BTW... I really enjoyed your poem.

I may say, upon reflection
I can tell by your inflection
That you grace some lovely lands

And I say without dejection
I would never have objection
to once again trod those sands

Nicely phrased and imaged.  KJ

Enjoyed! I have a friend poet from New Orleans that sends me some delightful jokes of southern flavor. Thibodeaux and Boudreaux ones are my favorites.

Ethel, this is nice. I'm from Ohio and even though I've been in California over thirty years, others still comment on my accent.... even my children smirk (lovingly) at the way I pronouce certain words....

Loved your comment also about porch and gathering of neighbors...

God bless, warm regards, Pat

I love southern accents. I have one too- In Delaware, there is a regional dilect found nowhere else in the US. We pronounce home  haome and phone phaone. I also say country cuahntray. My mom makes fun of me, becase she grew up in the city, but I think that southern drauls are charming. Nice poem, I noticed how you always sall ya'll.
Weall I'll see ya' later- ya'll come back know, ya hear!

Charming. My best friend's mom had a southern drawl and this friend has taught me how to cook great food. There's also a relaxing secret ingredient in your poetry. Thank you.

Michael.....
You're plumb welcome !!HaHa!! It's really
fun talking this way, isn't it??

Lyra....
Thanks, lady. I like to hear people talk with
NY accents. My brother lived in NYC for quite
a few years and picked up the accent. I could
live there for the rest of my life and still
probably talk real slow. Ha!Ha!

kayjay...
Thanks so much for reading my poem
I really loved the poem that you
replied with, too.

Dixie...
Yep, I know that you can relate, being from
the same area Thanks for reading and
for your reply.

Debra....
Uh-huh....you qualify. Yeah, there's nothing
like grits, eggs, bacon (or maybe sausage),
and biscuits.....especially grits, huh??

Sue....
Thanks very much for reading and replying
I'm glad that you liked it.

Virginia...
I appreciate your reading and replying to my poem. The South really can come up with some good jokes, huh?

Pat...
Thank you for reading and replying. People
do have fun with the accents of others, don't
they? A friend of mine says "youens",
instead of "ya'll", and I love to hear her
say that. She pronounces a lot of words differently than I do.
Yeah, before all the modern conveniences,
people did seem to have more time to be
neighborly.

Liz...
Hey, I like the graphics and the way you pronounce words.
Thank you for reading and replying to my poem.

Moonflower.....
Hey, I bet your Texas drawl is real
cute. Thanks for your reply and for
reading my poem.

Bill...
Thank you so much for ready and replying
to my poem. I really do appreciate it.

Robert...
Yeah, there are oodles of good Southern
recipes. Thanks for your really sweet
comments. I appreciate it.
