Oil- to bribe (a variant of grease)
                 -A Dictionary of Euphemisms

.
.
.
Big Oil pukes in the ocean
a shroud blacks the air and the sea,
green is the Texan's devotion
and dark is our Earth's legacy

The "status", the "standing", the "rank"
of the tanker "Prestige" is it sank,
now twice the Valdez's profane
will garrotte once affable Spain

It will fossilize mammal and bird
shall for decades add fish to it's toll,
local papers say nary a word
as once vital are sculpted to coal

Sure it flew a Bahamian flag
that's the ruse of the scalawag,
operations facade lists as Greece
and by cowboys they're promised a piece

Hitachi built '76'
classified Dubai double aught-two,
while Espana grows sick in the slick
any blame will get lost in the goo

The Maritime Global Net site
closed the records of safety real tight
the American Bureau of Shipping
are their Houston headquarters lips zipping

The posse, the Princes of earl
run the show so they'll ride away
leaving outlined their fingerprints whorls
the masked man and his Kenny boy Lay.

yes it is a terrible thing...and the true shame is it was probably preventable had the ship been maintianed as it should and inspected...or scrapped in favor of the double hulled... but greed and economy drive much..and some to the brink of destruction

...Man beware Gaia's revenge...

You've written a fine piece on a not so fine matter.

A sad testament to human greed--well said!

This is a real pain, isn't it?  I hope they can fix this before it turns into a huge problem.

I was so very pleased with your poem though, Wells, that I felt inappropriately happy throughout... anapestic trimeter does that for me...

I found it fascinating that you used anapestic for such a serious matter though (especially trimeter, because of the initial pause between verses in any trimeter).  It is in danger of sounding a little limericky, which you have to be careful of.  It makes the poem's tone a bit disagreeable with the actual content, however, which is definitely something interesting and enjoyable about this piece.

Well written.
