"Some of the comments that have been uttered about Islam do not reflect the sentiments of my government or the sentiments of most Americans," Bush told reporters as he began a meeting with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan (news - web sites).

"By far, the vast majority of American citizens respect the Islamic people and the Muslim faith. After all, there are millions of peaceful-loving Muslim Americans," Bush said.

"Ours is a country based upon tolerance ... And we're not going to let the war on terror or terrorists cause us to change our values."

Thank you, Mr President.
I know I often set fire
to burn a Bush
because
I do not generally agree
with your political POV.
But today I agree
and want to say
thank you
for
speaking out
for tolerance.

Kacy,
I surfed for icons last night and downloaded a whole bunch. Have to link them to my own site but they gonna be fun. Did you see the chicken?

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

There is much to be said for tolerance, and it is much lacking in this country nowdays.

he says that while various agencies he empowered run rampant through the muslim community profiling, spying, and deporting on what was once considered flimsy to unsubstantiated wrongdoings; trust me, i'm tapped in.

don't let these politicos fool you, what else was the hick going to say with khofi annan's ears picqued.

I hear you, majnu.  I am not easily fooled.
But I think comments like this made by any public figure that can defuse the deadly backlash against the thousands of good Muslims is a  positive step in the correct direction.
And of course, we must all guard against the abuses of our basic civil rights, or lose the very foundation of freedom.
I am not waving flags or cheering here, just commenting on a positive statement.

But we should keep our ears and eyes open, Kacy...
We just don't know whats going to happen next, and thats the frightening part of all of this!
At least we got one positive statement, though

Yes, Lyra. 'tis true. I myself am ususally suspicious and cynical when it comes to politics. But in fairness, a positive statement must be acknowledged.
But keep watching your backside.

Peace and tolerance, what a lovely write.  I must admit then to being in the majority as I do respect the Islamic people.  I guess maybe now after hearing this I will have one aspect of the Bush reign to agree with.
