I recieved an unexpected phone call from an editor yesterday requesting to publish two of my poems in a medical journal, one was this one written in response to a challange . The post was a photograph and the challange was to write from the doctor's point of view of a surgery he did that made history. While preforming a life saving technique  on a 21 week fetus inside it's mother's womb, the tiny baby reached out to clasp this doctor's finger...

Humbled

My steady hands hold the knife;
well practiced, well learned
and I stand at the brink
of science at its finest.
Today, I make history.

One quick cut, and blood flows
in a gentle stream
upon an abdomen
where life resides within.
I break the barrier
between our world and another,
going where no other doctor
has ever been.

As the dam of amniotic fluid
is broken and I smile
at my greatness,
one tiny hand
reaches out
to grasp mine.

In one breathless moment,
I’m reduced to humility.

~ Ruth

How well I remember this, and I am so
very glad to know of a poet who is seen
for all that she helps bring into this
world...thank you Ruth, for letting us know,
and for revisiting this poem for us...

This is without doubt my all time favorite of your work.  Of course, I told you that last time I saw you, didn't I?.. But - the epitome of compliment, my friend - I'm exhilarated for you that this wonderful piece will appear in a medical journal... just where it belongs...I'm smiling...

First let me say that this is certainly not the only poem of yours worth notice, (I personally love the one you wrote on the way to Martha's Vineyard when I captured you writing it on film), but this one is exceptional and so dear to my heart.

My son sent me this in an email a long time ago and after realizing it was not a hoax, I kept the link below on file in my favorites as one of the greatest pictures, and miracles that I have ever seen.

I am so glad your words have done it such justice Ruth, the doctor and certainly as Samuel Armas indeed deserve the entire world's respect. It was incredible.  Here is the link for anyone wishing to read about this child.
