That Day With Death

Upon the eve of that day,
that day for all but he to be unknown,
he knew only of his work, his loneliness,
of apparent life.

Upon the eve of that day,
he feared his life and not it's abscence.
Obliviouls to the fate of that eve's sunset
he bid no farewells,
he cried goodbyes for none.
For he knew not of that day.

But when he awoke, his body lay dead
on that day with death.
"Pardon my intrusion, young fellow,
would you require to know just who I am?"
"I believe I should, you're in my chambers!"
"I...am known as Death."

"Then you've come for me, I fear you not."
"As well, no one should, but I require to know
just why you sought me not."
"I did not seek the Harbinger of Doom, because I longed not for thy release."
"But you found your life cumbersome, lonely, full of grief."
"Yes, my life was a burdon."...
"A burdon compared to what...
I hold no answers, good sir,
I merely here to reach and learn.
Travel with me on this day."

"Travel with death?...What fruitlessness is this?
If my time has come, take me now.
Show me whether Heaven or Hell...be Truth or Myth."

"That is not, as yet,for you to be known.Come..I've many stops to make.A visit to release an old widow.A helpful hand to fate."

So he followed Death from the room, into the cheery sky.
Realizing but momentaniously that he could now fly.
They made many stops that day.
Some for deliverance, some for vengance.
Death forever the master.
No one to stop his sythe.

It drowned on him as the eve drew near
that in death, life is made precious.
And while he made no a attempt
to glory eternal sleep,
Perhaps for some, it was peace.

"Death, you've shown me much this day,
the quality of life.
Return me now to my resting place,
I will live.
For though lonely, and love-starved."

Alas, I have life.
Is that not enough in itself.
For life is certainly better than death."

He felt Death smile beneath his ragged hood.
"Return then, thou convicted to your mortal world."

He awoke, it was another day.
He was not missed that day.
He truly didn't care.
He drew a breath into his lungs
and shouted simply for the joy of life.
No one wept that he had died.
No one knew of his journey
to the other side.

It was between him and death.
It was not a lesson, taught and learned...
so with much ado,
he took it upon himself again,
his cumbersome life.

But he bid not a farewell.
No tears were cried...
and many years from now
after a full, rich life,
filled with love and children's laughter,
he'll recall that day with death
and peacefully sigh...and die.
Bidding no farewells,
but alas a tear was shed.
Goodbyes were cried
on that day with death.

Wow..This is one of the few poems that I have ever read in story format that I was held to the story the entire time. Beautifly written, the idea took something as original and certain as death and made it unique and uncertain. I loved the mentions made toward the Grim Reeper and the conversation that was held between the man and death. Enjoyable read and defintly memorable.
