Hmmm...I think (?) I remember this word from when I was a kid and we played games like 'capture the flag.' Someone would yell out 'alle alle, tocsin free!' and you got to go 'home' and be safe. But then, maybe that's not what we said at all!!! Whatever, it was a clever way to learn a new word and I asked Ron if he knew what it meant and he looked at me like I had 12 heads! hehehe Hugs, Marti |

Marge, at first I thought this was some ancient Indian chant or something...Boy, was I ever way out of the ballpark.... Yes, ring the bell...and...I can't even start to believe that the 'Deer is suffering from dryquillitis.....though it is a disease or malady that is feared by all poets.... |

...'Marti~ LOL ... well, I 'think' it went - Ollie, Ollie Oxen ... all home free~ BUT .... as long as it stirred a remember .. that's cool with me~ I 'made up' the Alle, Alle ... cause we're poets and we can do that~...' Well Marge, this certainly caused me to giggle. I knew it was something like what you had written. "Ollie, Ollie Oxen." Now just what does that mean anyway? LOL!!!!! And YOU can make up any words you want, cause you are the MISTRESS of fabulous new words. hehehe Marti |

MzMartiGal~ quote:Now you just KNEW I'd find a reasonable facsimile of an answer or two for you ... didn't you ?? _________________________________________________________ OLLY, OLLY OXEN FREE – “If you’ve ever wondered about the origins of this chant – used to call in all players at the end of a game of hide-and-seek – be advised that the experts only have a partial answer to your lifelong puzzlement. Word sleuths are fairly certain that the ‘oxen’ (or ‘octen’) in the call is simply a childish corruption of ‘all in.’ The rest remains a mystery.” From “Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins” by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997). _________________________________________________________ AND ... another opinion can be found here - http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=19970422 Me WUBS a day of learning ! *Hugs* to you gal~ ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |
