Candid Words Too simply put, biology’s B was from extremely hard work, for the cow’s eyeball, already dead, no pain, no problem, but inject baby chicks? No way. Don’t tell me that nail in a green frog’s spine is going to dull its senses, for it most certainly dulled none of mine, each slice digging deeper into my soul… no vet to be born, here, for the agony any animal suffers is felt tenfold within this heart…making me powerless to inject yet more pain, even for its good…in this, I am weak… so the only thing I pull apart, put together, dissect and taste, reconstruct and extract DNA from, are words. Candid, word of the night. Candied id would have suited Freud, I hear he had a sweet tooth, but I’m sure that was someone’s slip… truth be known, it is a most glowing word, the roaming Romans knew its light, but then it changes suit and stands upright, baring itself honestly… two fair words divide into able words… can…. did…. Like the train that chooed itself up the hill I think I can I think I can, the runner who met himself coming in last at least did himself a service in making effort… no less the train… does the and of it bring me a smile, pulling two rights into one’s straightforward ability to be honest? If there was a word playing around my head tonight, it’s candid… because it is itself a delightful word, and allowed itself to center here, in this little bit… unbiased… impartial. Honest. Karilea |

Sometimes we meet a person who just exudes the feeling of faithful, caring, giving, sincere....and last...but never least... Honest.... YOU are that type of person to me...and I am sure to many others as well.... Oh, one more word that falls right in line.. TRUST! |

(smiles) Oh Karilea, I love this, candid is indeed such a powerful word as it expresses such a freedom from prejudice and a great visual up-close perspective! (sigh) This is wonderful, sweet friend, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! A very honest and beautiful write, Karilea... Have you ever noticed that the word candid sounds a bit like candied? I guess I constantly think about food. I loved the beginning part about the frog... it reminded me of biology lab, when we had to dissect the frog right before lunchtime...and then we went to the cafeteria and they were serving those little cornish hens...which started to look exactly like frogs to me... I think it took about 5 yrs after biology before I could eat chicken again. ~ froggy hugs from a chipmunk Lyra |

Wow ... a very powerful write Karilea. You swooshed me right back about 25-30 years to my biology class. I remember the teacher saying the frogs were "pithed (sp?) a needle through their head anyway, and that although they were quite alive, they couldn't move and couldn't feel pain. I told the teacher that if that was truly the case, then I'd be happy to "pith" him, to see how humane it felt for him to be in that state. When he rolled his eyes at yet another "animal lover" ... I said I wouldn't do it ... got up, and walked right out the classroom door telling him to flunk me if he wanted. I took a zero on the assignment, and never felt better about getting a bad grade in my life. Hugs to you for the frankness and candor in this write. Exceptionally well done, and thought provoking, much enjoyed. Best wishes, /Kit |

I would much rather dissect words, than frogs or any other animal. |

This is a fantastic piece! It certainly shows how erudite you be, young lady. Very enjoyable read being a poem with so many facets, yes, dissecting words, a wonderful occupation. btw, did you notice that 'candid' has 'dna' in it, too? You c id when you remove its dna. Well ... this is great, I am sitting here crying for a frog I saved over 35 years ago at least! I went to detention actually as I would not dissect it in Grade 10 or 11 biology. I made a huge stink in "Zot's" class and a few boycotted the class that day, and that I remember so well. Yanno the wonderful thing about poetry, or one single word? It can bring feelings up long buried that need to be addressed - so today my trigger word was frog - done by Sunshine I couldn't kill a fly (I let them outside). However, I don't want to turn your lovely poem into a full scale discussion about animal testing but I could! Candid indeed! The most valuable thing you own is a smile, wear it, and share it. |

I really enjoyed the thought and care that went into this, Karilea. It might be two separate poems. |

Call me a wimp if you like, but I won't even step on an ant if I know it's there. I also took a "0" on the frog and then another one on the worm in my biology class. They were living creatures and all life feels pain, regardless of what my teacher had to say. Nicely penned, Karilea. |
