You'd have me span the vastness of this gulf that separates us from a common fate? Bridges are too expensive my dear child. Materials much too scarce. Yet, for a while, long ago, I dreamed of making monuments the likes of which would shame the Golden Gate. How wonderful to dream! When we were young, gems of hope graced our supple necks. Wild fantasies impelled us to forget Life's cruelest joke. Its humbling truth -- That there are destinies belonging only to youth. Now you pray that I traverse this chasm. But neither rantings nor raves convince me that crossing it is worth at least all of the treasures of this earth. Forget it child. The distance is too wide. When young I'd span it to the other side. Span? Hell! I'd leap across to where you are and then come back and leap across it once again. [This message has been edited by Radrook (10-09-2002 05:22 PM).] |

Hi! GOlDsparklESS Yes, it is not easy to recognize our limitations as time passes. But fortunately time also brings wisdom with which to deal with these. Glad you enjoyed the poem. |

When some of our dreams have come and gone without fruition, it can be a sad state of affairs. Perhaps you could have new goals that you could dare to dream---attainable dreams that could fit comfortably into your life. Instead of our dwelling on lost yesterdays---perhaps we should dream of finding new tomorrows. You have written a fine poem---so full of tangible emotion. I pray that the despair and resignation that I sense in your writing, will be replaced with new dreams for your tomorrows. EA |

Certainly we should have new goals. Reasonable goals. But if our goals remain those only attainabe by youth, when we are no longer young, then we can only run up aganst frustration. The young lady in the poem has amorous unrealistic goals which demand that the aged gentleman behave like a youth. These he rightly sees as unatainable, unreachable--and tells her why. But yes, goals should always be part of our lives. Otherwise we vegetate--which is a condition to be avoided at all costs! Thank you all for the feedback. God bless!
