(Being part Cherokee-Indian, I have been greatly touched and influenced by the stories of my ancestors, and the story of the White Buffalo is one that touches me most of all which my grandpa first read to me when I was young! I write this poem sharing the gist of the great story with you! )

(This picture is of the buffalo calf, Miracle, born in 1994.

White Buffalo Woman
By: Noah Eaton
9/23/02

White buffalo woman, with four ages cursing your veins
Play to us your sacred pipe of petaowihankeshini, let your voice smoulder
As AnpetuWi, the great sun, is my witness
Accustom my soul to that of my Grandmother and Grandfather

Guide me, let me walk like a living prayer
Build me as a bridge between the sacred Above and Beneath
And I will swallow the earth and sky and fire with this evanescent spoon
For in the sacred code of family we are one in entirety

Open up your bundle before these weary pair of eyes
And I will offer you this wacanga that purifies the soul
Let so the breath of the Grandfather Mystery tremble
Between the legged and the winged and all that speak so

I shall hold this chanunpa my grandfather has bestowed to me
Vigilantly watching as you roll four times into the learned white calf
And play it to hold back these waters from this sacred circle
I share with my people, for my most precious blooded children at long last

I sit beside this campfire, awaiting for your return
Sprinkling the wild turnip on, enriching our common creed
For my flesh and blood bleeds like that of you
I will sacrifice every drop for the sake of our humanity

White buffalo woman, from this wooden stem I let flow
The seeds of creation and the spotted eagle's fearless cry
White buffalo woman, we shall meet again
The spirits will not rest, born again may who die...

"Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..."

Shakira

Noah, the spirits were definitely with you to tell this magnificent story. Thank you for sharing it with us.

'...White buffalo woman, we shall meet again
The spirits will not rest, born again may who die...'

And indeed, you shall meet again.

Fabulous dear friend,   Hugs, Marti

I love this. But of course I love animals in general.

Noah---

You spoke with such reverence and respect for the sacred traditions of your ancestors.
Very well done!

The white buffalo woman gave us the peace pipe and the knowledge to find the smoking plants. The smoke that rises from the bowl are prayers that soar up to the great sprit.

You are able to stretch yourself in so many directions...a fine piece with a folkloric feel to it, an antiquity of wisdom and tale, I guess.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
