A Grander Scheme Old entered these bones some time ago, somewhere between youth and now, between perfect eyes and bifocals, but always with you there. We matured as one, held the kids of our kids, then wrinkled and silvered… together. But now, as I sit here with your bible in my hands, the faith you helped me understand, ebbs. I see your eyes sparkling, alight with awe, as you read passage after passage, explaining each to me along the way, telling me to believe… just believe… in a grander scheme. I open the book, ruffle through the pages - the scent of you waifs in the air - and I don't see what you saw. If His love was so powerful, so wonderful, we'd be together beneath the tree where you lay, not you alone, nor just me, but We - I wouldn't be sitting here holding your book trying to understand how this grand scheme could tie us together as one, for so many years, yet leave us alone in the end. I close the book, longing for the warmth of you, yearning to believe as you, but all I see is me, sitting here holding your book… Alone. wesley james beard, jr. © septemeber 2002 Note: I wrote this based upon a visit I made to an old folks home, as we called it, way back when I was in high school. That awesome visit has touched me for 40-plus years now and has been the mother of several writing I've made. My role as Santa Claus that day, was the saddest thing I've ever done in my life - even burying some of those I love - was easier. This piece has taken years to write and stems from a direct conversation with a very tearful lady sitting on the lap of sixteen year old Santa trying to explain what she wanted for Christmas. Not sure you'll feel what I wanted it to emanate, because it really doesn't contain what I wanted, but it now satisfies that part of my soul needing to voice her anguish and is essentially her cry - Jimmy. |

I understand this only too well, Jimmy... My first husband died in May of 99, after 34 very close and wonderful years of marriage. We were as one... but fate ripped us in two. And although, I'm now happily married again, my heart still grieves for him and for those years we loved together... This touched me so very deeply... and I think you wrote it very well... Thanks for sharing it with us. ~ lots of hugs Lyra |

Jimmy, don't fret over what you have written, feeling you didn't quite hit the mark... Let us be the judges of that... For I think you have written a poem that you should take, put away and treasure it as a family keepsake to be read and read..again and again...as time passes.. |

They...say... that answers come with time... your poem speaks to the questions we riddle ourselves with, when we are at a loss over a loss... and of course, your character IS holding the answer... and held the answer... always... |

Jimmy Amazing to think of that 16 year old Santa and the feelings and lessons that time shared with her brought to the older you. Thank you so much for sharing it here with us. |

This is one of the most heartfelt poems I have ever read. You are a very tender and thoughtful human being. Chris Life is not measured by breaths you take, but by moments that take your breath away. |
