Get a job, asian boy Spend your whole life writing, playing videogames? Get a job while you're still attractive So they won't kick you out when you're old and ugly. Be the boss man's friend, steal his job while you still have 'abs.' Hire your nephews, your nieces and your cousins. Take their place and make it our place They won't miss it, they don't deserve it. Get a haircut, asian boy. You see any other asian boys with long greasy hair? Down to their shoulders, in their eyes and on their chests? Fancy cuts, tapered cuts, feathered cuts Red highlights, blond streaks, auburn waves Spikes, Stripes, Layers, braids and twists And what the hell is an auburn wave? Don't look so nice, you look out of place here Here, in one of Our Places. Pheh. Get some new clothes, Asian boy. You look like a bum, like a white man's son. Leave those jeans for the rest of them. You aren't them. You are asian. Boy. Go get yourself some slacks. Go get yourself some black socks. Go get yourself some loafers. For gods sake, Go get yourself some leather. Get yourself a dozen dark blue sweaters with emblems on their chests. Some emblem, any emblem. We're counting on you, asian boy. You are the future, my future, our future. We're so proud of you, asian boy. You go to college now, you get nice education, you make money. Date a white girl if you want, but I wouldn't bring her home. We have someone in mind for you, asian boy. Asian girl. Keep your head up, asian boy. One day you'll understand, one day you'll have an asian boy of your own. One day you'll take care of all of us, We can say that we knew you, asian boy. We can say that 'We almost lost asian boy, But he turned out alright in the end.' Good luck, asian boy. Good luck, indeed. [This message has been edited by Antihero (09-17-2002 03:19 AM).] |

I sense much pent-up anger and rebellion in these words. Sounds like to me you are the "Asian boy" in the write. As an anti-hero, I bet anti-establishment too. I could be wrong. It is good to vent through writing. Keep it up. I can somewhat relate to your "anti" ways. Good luck. |

This does seem to represent a great deal of pent up anger but also illustrates the conflicts between cultural differences. I can see the values that the family is trying to establish and maintain being at odds with the total assimilation of the younger generations into what is considered mainstream. Venting is good..if venting is all indeed that prompted this, but if you look under the surface you have made the case for both ways....the choice would then be up to the individual to decide how and what is best. |

Your pain bleeds through in this one, Kenny. You could get a job writing and testing all those video games, no reason to stop playing. Or you could become a real live Anime hero or antihero. Or you could be a teacher or a dogcatcher or a mailman or a salesman in a music store or the President if you are really crazy and rich at the same time. Or...anything Kenny decides he wants to be. Parental pressure and peer pressure...after a while, it's all the same game. Someone always pecking at you to be what they imagine you should be. I somehow think you have the strength to be....Kenny. |
