Held In Convictions of Love

Held in convictions of love,
Lighting your candles in the wind
With the whimpering soft caress
Of each soulful heartfelt word
That shall lead to yet another cliché,
You attempt to convince me
That the world is picturesque
And your heart is made of glass.

There’s something else to write,
Had you courage to confess:
Each Hallmark line, well-written rhyme,
Also comes with scars and shards.
Love, alas, is dark as well as light,
Piercing with precise importunity;
Without the mettle of this avowal,
One cannot write love with any class.

Great poem, I especially like the line

"Each Hallmark line, well-written rhyme, "

I have two points to make about this well written poem.

"You attempt to convince me
That the world is picturesque
And your heart is made of glass."

~ Now some readers could criticize the "...heart is made of glass." line as a cliche, however the writer here takes a cliche and gives it an entirely different meaning based on the previous two lines. Excellent twist to the ol' heart made of glass, indeed.

"There’s something else to write,
Had you courage to confess:"

~ Very good setup for the rest of this stanza. How many times do we ignore or pretend the bad side of a relationship doesn't exist and sugarcoat the rest?

"Each Hallmark line, well-written rhyme,
Also comes with scars and shards.
Love, alas, is dark as well as light,
Piercing with precise importunity;
Without the mettle of this avowal,
One cannot write love with any class."

~ And is described quite elogantly with a great reference/analogy to good ol' Hallmark card.

I enjoyed this very much.
