(I wrote this poem not to offend any fans of soccer, but to talk about how I feel of the bad sportsmanship the sport has had and how I wish the teams can get along with each other and the violence can be stopped) Dusty Fingers, Sweaty Palms By: Noah Eaton 6/17/02 I have never understood football So much drama on the big green Making fools out of allies Newspapers placing their bets with something up their sleeves Referees pull out their red cards Such as Angel Sanchez for a bad Portuguese tackle Only to find a punch to the stomach By the star player tied in his teams' shackles What's with all these dusty fingers and sweaty palms? Who is wearing the cleats? All these scandals you create And all the embarrassment you only feat Think about what you have done Think about how you should play Even the novice chess player is not foolish to think When will you realize that it is only a game That it is only a game I've heard of a Thai man who murdered his wife Quarreling over the remote control A tale of two soap operas Ending in a bitter turmoil Needless to say objection when there's condemning in the courts When someone is always being sustained Like Mexico in response to losing To the 72-year breakthrough to the semifinals by the U.S.A What's with all these dusty fingers and sweaty palms? Who is wearing the cleats? All these scandals you create And all the embarrassment you only feat Think about what you have done Think about how you should play Even the novice chess player is not foolish to think When will you realize that it is only a game That it is only a game It's just a game It's just a game... "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." Shakira [This message has been edited by Mistletoe Angel (06-17-2002 10:01 PM).] |

You are so right, Noah... I have never understood why people get so worked up over something which is just a game... and you have captured that question perfectly in this poem. ~ hugs for sportsmanship Lyra |

I don't watch soccer, but you captured the feelings many of us feel watching other sports as well. We used to go to battle on fields with rocks and long poles for weapons. The goal was to capture the other end of the field. We just keep spinning 'round and 'round in time - battlefields and soccerfields - one in the same. Why can't someone invent a game where everyone wins? Maybe then we'd learn something about peace, and be able to apply THAT to our world now. Nice write! Create something infinite today - Smile!!! |

May just be a game but my girlfriend stayed up til six in the morning so she could watch her country (Korea) play...and they won and she was in heaven...and if they lost she would have been depressed...the game touches people on a very emotional level... I told her that the USA was going to play Korea and win and she got kindof mad at me...we shall see who comes out on top...James |

Hello Noah You summed up perfectly how I also feel for it is "just a game". Here in Melbourne the Italian community caused chaos last night when their team lost. They went on a rampage throwing fire bombs, throwing rocks etc. and for what??? Because they couldn't accept defeat??? I think the whole thing is out of hand but how do you control so many crazy fans? Thank you for writing this and sending such an important message. Take care.....Sue Suetang |

Good message Noah. Don't you think that part of the problem is that the authorities didn't squelch such occurences when they first began to happen decades ago. Soccer is one of the sports in the world that has such a long standing bad reputation for such actions. We see a little of it here in our country but nothing on such a scale. You don't see the fans at Nascar revolt when their driver doesn't win the race! Go figure eh! Thanks for the discussion. |
