The Glass of Air that Separates

In the room I roamed
with ear pressed against
the glass of air that separated
my table from theirs.

Lost to my companion,
consumed by a conversation
from behind,
words with no faces.

A toast to beginnings and endings,
what do you say? I heard.
Out with the old,
in with the new.
To beginnings and endings,
and to truth, no matter what.

I looked up to the clear eyed watch
of my companion,
who understood the nature of my listening.

A toast, I thought,
a brown table, a glass,
the napkin with a wet circle.
How many things are permanent?
The circle,
a symbol of continuity and continuation,
yet, this circle will be gone soon,
dried up and thrown away,
carted off and dumped into a landfill
and forever changed.
Are we in life, like the napkin,
imprinted, used and thrown away?

My companion touched the circle on my finger,
the symbol of our love,
he touched it with his own.

Uncertain of direction
I listened still.
I toast to truth
and just straight lines, I heard.

I looked down at our hands
now interlocked
warm on warm
and raised my glass.

To circles, I said.

too thin
a circle is broken
too thick
no one can get in
tho, one honed with faith
a symbol of neverending love
for no one knows
where the end of a circle is

Martie, you get a WOWSERS
for this magnificent worded piece of faith.
Love the flow and storyline in it, Mart,
~ friendly smiles ~

again, you have touched magnificence in your perception and outpouring of words

This should be on silver and golden anniversary cards
and on cards for the intent of continuity of promises for all the times between

may I share with a few friends?
This is beautiful, Martie!

MartieSis~

Very touching ... and very symbolic~

'My companion touched the circle on my finger,
the symbol of our love,
he touched it with his own.

Uncertain of direction
I listened still.
I toast to truth
and just straight lines, I heard.

I looked down at our hands
now interlocked
warm on warm

To circles, I said.'

Yes ....
