The Dry – From the Soddy - 1860

The old ones say
Be chary what you yearn for

We put faith in for a bit of dry
Not recalling how large a bit can be
A space of dry
Overlooking how spacious are His ideas.

The crustier ones say
He has a sense of humor.
Indeed He does,
Bringing the sun closer, it seems
To cast light in all corners to see if we are now
As dry as we thought we wanted to be.

Drawn from the deep well,
now dank dishwater is used to
Water the soddy from cracking too much,
Lest it blow away.

Birds do not fly in this heat
Unless it is a buzzard or more
To rest on bones of the weary gone deaf
For even the weeds crackle loudly.

Outside, all one wants to do is
Pace through duties, a mind-bending chore
To place one foot in front of the other
Let alone to think of how we
Skipped through spring.

When inside, I need to know
I can still think, still feel, so I sit
Here at my table, the heavy walls casting
Darker, cooler shadows over me,
A bit of light through the one window

And on this bit of sack, I scratch, sketch
Just to hear and see my thoughts,
To know I am
Still alive.

BRAVO!!! Oh Karilea, I enjoy this very uch, sweet friend, yes, indeed it may seem as though He is punishing us when the ground is so dry and there is such malnutrition in the soils of our hearts, yet we contemplate outside the big picture and know we are still alive and it is because deep in our hearts that faith holds the oasis, and that is all we really need as long as we believe! (sigh) This is another excellent edition from the Soddy library, sweet friend, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Our English was so much different, not so very long ago.
I always enjoy it with a bit of patina.

Smiling at ALL of you.

Especially those of you who have responded...with such wonderful thoughts.

Tomorrow at our weekly poetry meeting for Prairie Inkwells, I have, with the help of one of our members, initiated a "Hat's Off" meeting - or in other words, "doffing our hats" for those who have been through some hardships recently - and mainly, medical. We have one member undergoing the hard decisions of a cancer diagnosis; another member's husband undergoing cancer treatments; yet another member who has endured open heart surgery and all of its issues.

So we are going to celebrate life! We are bringing in our hats [of varying styles] and writing of them...their history...their meanings. Hats have long played a discourse into the lives and styles of people internationally....and we hope to have some fun, and education, with our styles and ways of lives in celebration.

My thanks to all of you who read my writings. Just know, please, it is always from the heart, whether heavy or light...it is always for you.

I was very happy to see this piece of free verse from you. I enjoyed it a great deal and found you had a way of bringing me along with some of that willing suspension of disbelief that Keats used to talk about.  You were able to catch me up in the feel and flow of the thing.

Are you a fan of William Stafford?  I'm reasonably sure you'd know his stuff, but if you don't I think you'd really like it.  He loved the prairies.  "Farm on The Great Plains" might mean something special for you, if you don't know it already.

Thank you especially for this one.
