state of confusion

Fall Guy

We met in October –
picking out pumpkins in front of the market,
both reaching for the same albino-skinned one.
Hands grazed: you offered it to me
like a present.

Our kids noticed the spark,
you and I nervously scurried
in opposite directions
with our rickety carts.

Our sons knew each other from school -
they disappeared into the magazine aisle;
our daughters stood protectively
at our respective sides.

We managed to avoid one another
until the produce section.
I reached for a watermelon,
watched in horror as the one beneath it
rolled, dropped and smashed,
scattering bits of pink pulp onto my
bare legs and sandaled feet.

Our daughters giggled with restraint at first,
then held their stomachs in fits of laughter,
while I turned the shade of Red Delicious.

The boys came to see what was up,
my son announced to the world
that his mother’s a klutz.

Armed with paper towels from your cart,
you knelt and wiped the sticky fruit
from my feet, looked up,
a silent inquiry
whether moving to my calves
would be appropriate.

I laughed,
said if a man
wipes watermelon
from a woman’s legs,
she should at least know
his name.
