Should I think or should I feel Is one better than the other Sometimes I am not sure Whether I am thinking or feeling Or even someone else Was that a thought or a feeling They said I think but I heard I feel Or I feel and I heard I think How much of a difference is there Do we make too much of it Do we make enough of it I felt pain – I thought about why I was hurt Maybe I thought about pain and felt hurt… You are such a thinker You don’t care about feelings I have been told But then someone says They see lots of feelings in my poems So who is in charge here My mind or my heart Does it really matter Guess it does to some I wonder if I can Write a poem from the depth of my brain It is possible to write from the mind Or is it only our hearts that provide The images and feelings Our poems are made of Well here’s what I think Here’s what I write The stuff that my mind Plucks from my heart |

I love this idea for a poem, Paul... I've often asked myself the very same question. I think that feelings are thoughts which wrap themselves around our hearts... and its impossible to write a poem without using both processes. I used to belong to a website ( for only a couple of weeks, b/c I couldn't stand it any longer than that) which preached writing only with the mind and not with the heart. It was the most horrible website I have ever seen. They existed solely to tear everyone's work apart and if a kind word were ever said...they would jump all over the person who said it. I wrote a poem and posted it here some time ago about this website. The name of the website is everypoet....and it should have big caution signs on its signup page. The name of the poem I wrote about it is called "The Poetry Police" and I'll re-post it for you. Thanks for sharing your thoughts/feelings with us. I enjoyed this piece. ~ hugs and smiles Lyra |

Paul, you've surfaced such an interesting question here. Not just in poetry writing, in many aspects we juggle between being a thinker and feeler. I guess we use both in our expression of words, but others might perceive our writing in varying proportions of "think" and "feel" -- depending on whether the reader is more of a thinker or feeler himself too. As for this poem, you've made me think quite a bit mycafe Keep counting your blessings [This message has been edited by mycafe (07-11-2002 09:13 PM).] |

Paul Such an interesting poem. Some times I am told that my poems are deep, or that someone would love to play around in my mind...are those thinking poems? I think much poetry is simply a feeling given voice which turns it into a thought. Thinking about this too long, could make me crazy..but that would be too emotional. LOL I really enjoyed this! |

Paul, I enjoyed your poem. So, I'll add my 2 cents. I think you have to use your brain to get a poem that other people can understand, but you have to have something to write that is worth a poem-and that's feeling. You have to combine the two, and sometimes it's not easy. Nan(Pilgrim variety) |

Hello Paul I think it is a combination of the heart and the mind and a whole lot of soul which you clearly put into your words. All the best ingredients here! Take care......Sue I am in motion |
