Pending Deafness Shall I be as Beethoven and suffer the loudness of quiet ~ to rely solely on tonal qualities that tremor through floorboards and feel the disquiet of one's touch in their nervousness of this affliction? A child wonders at blindness & plays such games of bluff enough so to be glad to remove the folds of cloth from face & rejoice in the light. There, too, to play in water & sea foam and know momentarily (only) the closed hush of water's muffled qualities, only to spring forth & up & relish the cry of the gull or sound of bluejay, scolding. To know deafness may be coming one does hidden things ~ listens carefully to all words and measures with heartbeat the beating heart, the child's whisper, the cry of all babes, even a dial tone & certainly, a lover's voice. Then quietly, prays that the pending deafness is a long time coming. ~*~ ©Karilea Rilling Jungel Repost from 24 September, 2000 [This message has been edited by Sunshine (07-10-2002 08:45 PM).] |

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Karilea, this is so very sad, sweet friend, it is a shame that he could never listen to one of his greatest compositions, for it truly is one of the most beautiful melodies in all of history! (sigh) This is excellent, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! You always have a way to make words flow together with ease...I loved this, K. It's like we're seeing into the world of your deepest thoughts, and they're truly unique and beautiful. Wonderful poetry. *Krista Knutson* |

if impending deafness is real for you, may you always have the flow of sounds previously heard recorded in your head. kethry Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind. Unknown |

Karilea It would be interesting to feel the other senses become more finely tuned, but having heard a whisper...would miss much. This was beauitully written. |

Shall I be as Beethoven and suffer the loudness of quiet ~ to rely solely on tonal qualities that tremor through floorboards and feel the disquiet of one's touch What lovely and vivid imagery here, Karilea... I remember when my late mother in law was losing her hearing, she used to tell everyone to stop mumbling and to turn around and face her when they talked....it seems that she had learned to read lips. She never did get a hearing aid. ~ listening hugs Lyra |

As one who woke up without hearing I felt I'd truly lost my bearing The left ear gone, the right remaining Could I take some pill, some training 'Twas only fluid from a bygone cold but the icy grip of fear caught hold I could not tell a scream from a rumble For hearing now I give thanks so humble Great espression of how we see the passing of time. Through rubble and trouble and dark of night |

KJ...so much truth....could be the deafness of the senses that capture all of what goes around in life....or the silence of a marriage.... Where two are together yet so very far apart in their daily lives.... Beautifully written dear lady... |

It comes to me that so many readers are now looking into the meanings of poetry, what words are left behind. The responses are often varied, as can be seen above. Thank you all for reading! I do have a small disorder, and yes, if gone untreated, could lead to deafness. But on the other hand, it is something that not much can be done for, so I "live with it", but stay on top of the research, just the same. Thank you to all who looked into the poem, for your understanding, and for your kind words. |
