They call me Mary, crazy Mary I let them, though it’s not my name They smirk with their knowing smiles Shake their heads at my life's shame I cackle wickedly just to give them a show As I let them think I don’t care They use me, but I get what I need Life is hard, who said it was fair? They don’t stay long enough to know The woman’s heart I keep hidden from view I doubt they’d understand anyway Sitting high and mighty in Sunday’s pew I’ve sinned and paid the price you see Left the family I raised on my own I got tired of seeing their hungry faces And knew they’d be better alone I heard some family took them in They get love and three good meals a day Sleep in beds with colored sheets And whisper my name each time they pray So look at me out of the corner of your eye Shake your head in misplaced pride But don’t ever think you know my life Until you curl up in my darkness to hide. |

This is a soul searing piece, PDV...I tried to find Gloom's original, but I couldn't... I enjoyed this one on it's own anyway... Great writing. ~ crazy hugs Lyra |

Oh yes, very well done indeed. Great theme, so true. I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance~~(Garth) |

an excellent response to the poem deVine. . . makes a person think twice. . . ----------------------------------------------------------- To the world, you may only be one person. But to one person, you may be the world. |

Good for you! How true is this, because until you walk in someone's shoes who gives anyone the right to judge. I printed this and you are going into the "Book Of Lessons (a printout of favorite peoms for my little ones of today when they grow up) There is nothing means more to me than |

This is such a vivid portrait. I feel even worse for Mary than I did after reading Gloom's poem. Nan |

So Cool!!! I cannot say enough to tell you how much this stirred me..... I lived downtown once... I remember knowing most of these forgotten souls... ate lunch with them played cards and shared re rolled butts. They all had a life once far from that place, the decision to walk away was not always their own. this one goes into my library. Sherry Cherish the good memories past and look forward to the adventure called Tomorrow. |

the solitude of the mad tugs incessantly on hearts of the staring sane and we puzzle don't we if WE will be the next who walks alone A superior writing about an all too familiar subject. Nice nice job! tSR |

I am always pleased when someone takes my humble words or meager thoughts and forms a piece of fine poetry with it, such as you have done here. Gloom |
