Penniless It all comes down to money, every greedy look, every whimpered need, each argument had, each touch that feeds into a society that says love is what makes the world go round... but without money you scrounge, counting pennies that fall between cracks of your life, picking them up on the hot asphalt burning your fingers, reminding you of its worth, and wondering if you put them in an old pair of loafers would they bring you good luck. Rolling those found, some escaping, spinning my thoughts as I chase them down watching the tubes grow, recounting when I lose the train of thought, weighing them in hold, a miserly feel in the rise. Clean ones from that machine that will eat socks, but not copper. Aged ones, making me green with envy, to only last so long in one piece. Bent ones, flattened ones, disrespected as I feel the rough edges and wonder why no one has "taken them out". Useless, except to a society that ends everything in a 99, always returning one cent back to me, adding to my growing collection until the need is forced again to make them count and over and over again the pain of value speaks to me in the tips of my fingers, aching as I fumble to fold the ends holding all there is. "Love is not blind - It sees more and not less, but because it sees more, it is willing to see less." (Will Moss) [This message has been edited by nakdthoughts (06-12-2002 06:25 AM).] |

I sense the meaning in this one M. Funny thing is I just wrapped pennies the other day!! Thank goodness for coin sorters and wrappers.....lol. Happy day to you. I could have missed the pain, but I'd have had to miss the dance~~(Garth) |

Pennies, and small change, Brings to mind an old poem T’was a time, When a conversation line, Across miles To hear smiles Only cost you one thin dime, Not this time. And paper, Financed a night’s wild caper, You could go To the show, And still stop for a flower, To buy her. Time inflated with passage. But what do we choose to spend, What coinage, How many dimes to call a friend, Better add a quarter now, The coinage Shrunk down in value somehow, So can’t you afford the price The coinage, Pay the effort to be nice, Spend the time to talk once more, Small coinage Friendly chatter as before. Life’s deflated with passage. Gloom |

All the idealistic notions we're taught of Love and what (should) matter is reduced to the clink of cynicism. Not much happiness is available in our society without the moolah, jack or scratch usually held just out of reach. Enjoyed. "Happy people have no history" - French Proverb |

This unfortunately is very true to many people. I do know some people though who although they may not have very much money they are the nicest people I've ever met. And we have lots of fun together without money. Dawn |

I think that money is highly overrated, Maureen....unless you are earning it doing something you love. My son Victor, who is a lawyer at one of the biggest law firms in the USA, makes tons of money but has decided to quit law because he hates it so much. He is going to get an MA in math and Ph.D. in physics. He won't make as much money, but he will be so much happier and less stressed. He might have to borrow those penny wrappers because he just might have to live on pennies for a while...but he really thinks it will be worth it...and I couldn't agree more.....and it will probably be better than being a cartoon. ~ a penny for your thoughts hugs Lyra |
