Opening Up Cupid eyes stare wantonly with cheesy smiles, hoping against hope for a taste, a sip of who I am. Such foolishness! I’m nothing more than a man like all the rest, lusting for what is not my own, drinking of bitter days, eating my own failures over and over... regurgitating the foul flavor. I fight, always, always... I refuse to lose, though often I have, but not as often as most, for I don’t fight on knees, half-heartedly. I fight, baring teeth, ready to chew my enemy and then spit him out. My childhood was broken and fate would break the man if it could. Yeah, IF it could! No, I can’t be broken. You grope, grasping blindly for hope. I have no need to grasp, for it is always within reach. It is part of who I am. Peace never leaves me. A flower withers, giving up petals, gasping its last breath. I gather them, feel their failing health, feel my own. Pressed against cheek I absorb the warmth of their life, inhale the fragrance of their being. They live beyond themselves. I fear, fear. I stomp it to death whenever I see it crawling, trying to run up my leg. Yes, true, like a roach, disgusting! I grind it underfoot because I must. |
