Pegger’s Delight ‘Twas a pegger’s delight that wonderful night when the two sat down to play. Its cribbage the game that from England came and they started into the fray. They’d played the match but couldn’t catch the cards each needed to win. So now it’s down to one play for the crown; Lady Luck looked on with a grin. “Lets cut for low” said Balkin’ Joe and slyly cut a three. “I’ve cooked your goose, why here’s a deuce” spoke Shufflin’ Sam McGee. Now Sam dealt six, a heady mix to each player, mean and hard. To the crib went two, each wanted his due; Sam turned the starter card. The card was a seven, and then by heaven , the pegs began to race. For each the score was twenty four, it was such a frantic pace. No player will see such cards as we saw that night in the hall. But I’m here to say, with streets to play , the two were havin’ a ball. The play went fast, I’d never last, the pace of them was such. The thirty-ones and all the runs’ How did they peg so much? Joe fought the fight, his goal in sight, he’s fifteen holes away. And Sam was cool, he was no fool, but he needed cards his way. For Shufflin’ Sam, his heart went slam, as he picked up his last card. And Balkin’ Joe was playin’ slow, the game he never marred. The eyes were alive, when Sam cut a five, the suit was just a spade. He wanted the win , he hid a grin, and down the card he laid. Joe made a frown, his card went down, a trophy he could claim. Sam led a jack and settled back, he just might get the game. Sam played again, and that was when Joe wanted time to think. The count played out, Joe started to pout. His peggin’ hole was stink. So now’s the time, with all this rhyme, you get to know the score. As Sam and Joe went to and fro. No one could want it more. Joe had the lead, he had the need.”The trophy will be mine”. But Sam lay his hand and Joe hadn’t planned to look at twenty-nine. |

Hey kayjay! Loved this! I need to break out the old cribbage board and find myself a pone and uncork the Chardonnay. Shenachie [This message has been edited by Bridget Shenachie (06-29-2002 01:38 AM).] |
