He stands before the judge Barely able to comprehend Ready to be sentenced to life For killing a person In the sin of the streets He lies in a ditch Bleeding to death For a country That will not allows him to drink A beer in the legality Of his home Creating fear that his driving rights Will be taken for a whisper of alcohol One child reaches adulthood at thirteen In the street that claims his innocence He is thrown to the wolves Of our legal system One adult in childhood Is ready to give up his life to defend our standards Who may never reach the time to grow up To the legality of being a whole person In every aspect of being an American On was drafted soon after birth With no hope to attain a purpose The streetwise torture chamber of hard knocks Lets him fight for territory not his own For bragging rights to a piece of dirt In the middle of a filth infested cesspool The privileged athlete was awarded a stellar trophy His sheltered life was academically challenged In books promising a bright future In a stepping stone of rights He climbed the social ladder King of a mole hill His manhood barely showing He struts the walk that talks In a language of rhythm That sings in the gangs of youth Graduating valedictorian Affluent to Middle America Serving in the Army of hope Giving him the finances To get the degree of hope In a war ravaged city The youth is repelled Soon after infancy Coming together to fight In the bruises of survival In a second of time The youth became the man of pain Where a thirteen year old sniper Had put a gapping hole In the blood that sees no age His life was mirroring death As a fellow soldier from A country not his own Had the rights of a real soldier Giving him a drink of Jack Daniel In the celebration of his manhood For it seems in the states we have to kill To be considered an adult While we send kids out to defend us For they are not yet fully legal adults Do we have hope of soldiers becoming adults Before they die Not when Californians want to take the rights To smoke away from them But they can serve in our armed forces In ever diminishing rights (still needs some refinements) Email me at davelyoung1@hotmail.com D.Lester Young (05/11/02) Tuscaloosa, AL Copyright © D.Lester Young (White Eagle poetry) http://www.authorsden.com/visit/author.asp?AuthorID=5012 |

Refinement? probably, but the message is clear and strong. Don't dilute it. Sayyy?... weren't we standing together at that anti-war rally back in '68'? ~wranx |

I am hearing you loud and clear. I love how bold and "in your face" this is. I agree, don't dilute a bit of it! Great write, strong voice! |
