How about taking something written in prose and paraphrasing it in a form of poetry? Perhaps something from a history book, a novel, newspaper, etc. Find something written in prose that is most interesting and then turn it into a poem with embellishments of your own. Make sure to cite the prose-source if you respond to this challenge. Good luck. [This message has been edited by Essorant (10-29-2006 09:51 PM).] |

Here is an example I began based on the prose from Chapter 1 in Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, describing the situation of Britain. I hope to add more to it now and then. The island, Britain, lying on the sea That known as Albion of antiquity, Northwest from Germany, and Spain and France, Is set apart from Europe's largest lands, Extending south to north and side to side Eight hundred miles in length, two hundred wide. This island offers many fruits and trees And beasts of burden graze in grassy leas. Some vineyards grow, and wells with many kinds Of waterbirds and fish the trav'ller finds. Porpoises, whales, and seals are caught here too, And shellfish holding pearls of every hue. From many cockles found, a dye is made, A scarlet red that age can not degrade; Nor sun nor rain may mar this colour rare But growing more with age it grows more fair.
