Convince me ... |

First off, I must say if it weren't for all the aweome free verse I've read since I discovered this site (was it really less than two months ago?), I would never be in this dillemma in the first place. Jeez, thanks a lot, guys! Anyway, my challenge is this: being a bona fide slave to rhyme (never missed a Rhymer's Anonymous meeting yet), I have had a great deal of difficulty doing anything in free verse. This annoys me endlessly, since it is my personal opinion that free verse is the purest form of poetry; the words must stand on their own without the support of rhyme or regular meter. What I need is proof that an old dog really CAN learn some new tricks; which is to say, I want some of you compulsive rhymers out there to throw some free verse my way, and the free-verse folks to try their hand at rhyme ... Please convince me that this is just a writer's block, not a genetic predisposition! (I am beginning to have my doubts ...) One special request, if I could ... on the subject of going against one's usual grain, might I entreat our own Sir Toerag to post something without one HINT of humor (much as I love his bashing) in it? (heheheheh) Thanks in advance, Nocht ------------------ "Nunc lento sonitu dicunt, morierus" (Now as I hear this bell tolling softly for another, it says to me, "Thou must die.") Ya bunch of cowards!!! I can't believe, with all the talent in this place, I haven't had more people take me up on this one ... I am having a CRISIS here ... LOL OK, here goes ... Madam deVine, pardon the play on words, but in consideration of your posts in adult, I don't think anyone would mind you "sucking" at anything ... (this is a compliment ... LOL) Lucie, it absolutely does NOT have to make sense, I love it when things don't make sense, I seem to understand it better that way ... Littlewings, was that a yes, or just friendly advice..? Anyone else...? Nocht |

I would, I'm serious, but one resource I am awfully low on right now is time. I might attempt it, but I can't guarantee it. For the challenge, I am all-around, so what do you want me to try? [This message has been edited by Artur Hawkwing (edited 09-23-1999).] |

How about something with a more definite structure, like a villanelle or pantoum, Artur? I plan to try a sestina ... LOL, masochist that I am ... been doing research on forms, I love a challenge ... Looking forward to your post ... Nocht |

I write both free verse and rhyme, serious and funny. It would definitely be a challenge to me to write a poem in a certain form. What is a villanelle? What are some other forms to play with? |

Tara: Might I suggest that you visit the following site: http://library.advanced.org/3721/poems/forms/learn.html [This message has been edited by Nochtdraco (edited 09-24-1999).] |

Peek into Dark and you'll find a few free verse pieces of mine. In Open I have a few blank verse as well as pantoums scattered throughout the forums. I believe I have a sestina in CA and a villanelle. Just for you, I'll repost a paradelle of mine; Winter. PLease look for it in Open2. If you have a form I have yet to try, please slide it my way. ------------------ Now and forever my heart hears ~one voice~. I know the forms of poetry are difficult, but maybe we should take one a week(?) and be challenged to write one? Just to stretch ourselves...what do you think? |
