My girls, ages 10 and 2,
shouting yee-ha!
like country girls
eating cool ranch doritoes
but you ain't seen nothing yet
as the grandfather clock
strikes the hour of sleep,
thier rose scented kisses,
sweep me off my feet.

Yesterday is ash, tomorrow is smoke; only today does the fire burn.

She talked about her twins
and I thought she was beautiful
her cheeks, rosy and all
she said:
“My girls are beautiful
and made me so glad
when they were born: twins
separated by
a hyphenated minute
so glad that I tripped”.

I asked “how’s that?”

She continued
“Why else would I call them
yee-ha and ha-yee
when I could have called
Maya (kindness) and Kavita (poetry)
or Chanda (moon) and Diya (lamp)?”

I had no words to argue!

So I simply asked their age
And she said
“10and2, they are,
born in the year 90and1
of the last century
when cool ranch doritoes
were still the most wanted thing
for a child
now they want a complete Barbie set!
Oh, when I was young,
I was just a  country girl
with simple needs and a simple life.
Things have changed so much!”

I said in small whispers
”you ain't seen nothing yet”

but she didn’t hear it and
continued to speak
”In my younger days,
the wind blew with such melody
and flowers grew so fine
and so many young men wanted to
sweep me off my feet
and I teased them by the shadows
of this grandfather clock
and asked them to be afraid
of the old man.
I did this in adventurous repeat
till one day the man of my life
entered full of dare
hiding behind his back
20and1 roses.
And gosh, did I blush
did I not blush
till the cheeks turned rosy
and my grandpa saw it
and ordered me in.
Timidly I went.
Reluctantly I
dragged myself into my shadows”

“And then?” I asked,
and she didn’t need
anymore prompting.

And an hour and half later
the story had been told
and that’s when the sunset
brushed her glowing face
and I came out of her courtyard
slightly confused

was she glowing because
of her undying love
for the Prince of her life
that once was
or were her cheeks glowing
because of the pride she felt
for yee-ha and ha-yee.

I still can’t decide.
------------

I hope I did alright... was fun...

regards
sudhir
