wow...and yes, I know...sigh... and more than the magazines, let's talk about all media, television, and designers who design clothes for MEN who want to wear women's clothing...(I don't object to that, but resent the size ranges limited to skinny teen-aged boys)--ever notice the lack of "darts" in petite dresses? sigh sigh sigh but truly, through the years, I have been many sizes--and I would like to say, that I have never had a problem with dates...we are not "bodies" containing souls...we are souls, that happen to inhabit the physical. and to quote a wise young writer, I simply say, "Be yourself..." (thanks, "C"!) AND? Thank you MC--YOUR beauty shines in this! |

LOL, I loved this look at the American beauty imagery. You'd think by now we could rise above size? I think most of the women's mags belittle women in general, and yet, it seems to be women who write and buy these rags. Poor self-image? I like the POV, a sense of humor in the irony of the split woman...a too thin/too fat dichotomy. |

Lyra: It's the same in the music business, especially women singers. You don't see very many great big rotund female country singers do you. I happen to know for a fact that there are many of them out there that never make it just because of that. Many many of them extremely talented! So it's all a BUSINESS! In our quest to enjoy the benefits of freedom the ultimate lifestyle has become a prerequisite for happiness. According to "Business Week" magazine, the typical American is exposed to about 3000 commercial messages each day. The power of advertising goes beyond the the selling of goods. It promotes a consumer lifestyle, a global culture that centers on material things with a certain look. Many people claim that advertising makes people restless and dissatisfied with what they have, nuturing and creating endless desires. Researcher Alan Durning writes: "Advertisemants, like our age, are mercuricial, hedonistic, image-laden and fashion driven; they glorify the individual, idealize consumption as the route to personal fulfillment, and afirm technological progress as the motive force of destiny." You're so right in this poem......this is what we get for our buck!! |

Well Lyra, I I was small for about 20 years. Then about 3 or 4 years ago, I started gaining. Uaually, I would gain a little and then lose. But, not that time. This time, when I gained, it stayed. If it wasn't for the fact, that I finally was able to by me some Levi jeans, I wouldn't care. Now, I can't wear my Levi jeans. Boo-Hoo!  |

  (smiles) Oh Lyra, I know just how you feel, it is absurd indeed, I too don't like that at all, it makes me sick to see how we treat each other in society and how our differing views seem to contradict each other and keep each other from feeling special! (big hugggsssss) I really don't like womens magazines at all, sweet friend, this is a powerful social view, we all love you so much! Thanks Karen... This was inspired by a shopping trip to Nieman Marcus in Chicago. I was looking for some jeans and I noticed that the size 0, 2, 4 and 6 were the easiest to find....the others were hidden behind those. I wear a 6 and that made me feel really fat. Then we walked around the Mall and I noticed that everyone was much skinnier than me... I'm sure glad that I live here in Michigan where ther is so much less pressure to be pencil thin than there is in Chicago, NY or any of the big cities. And the women's magazines are so 2 faced about everything...they say its okay to have some curves now...thats supposed to be the look thats "in" and yet if you look at their models....they probably wear size 0 or size 1. I never realized that men who wore women's clothing had a similar problem....thanks for enlightening me.  ~ size 0 hugsLyra |

Thanks Sue...I think that happens to us all as we get older. Sometimes I feel like inventing a clothes stretcher...sort of like a shoe stretcher....where you could put your clothes on it and turn the handle to get them to stretch to whatever size you want. The only problem with that is that if you got it too big, it might burst the seams. ~ older and larger hugsLyra |
