As black as coal in silent steel above the depths of deep blue sea A vessel made to war and win gliding through waters casually Sea in foam upon crest of wave stirring the dolphins swimming free Waters rushing like crystal fall sailing the blue, the deep blue sea Men on the bridge, in watch of harm scanning the horizon in view Lookouts in wait of the alarm as waters flow in bluish hue Clouds above blanket shining stars as the glow of dawn brings the light while crew below waking from sleep feeling the sway so ever slight Sounds of the oceans fall on ears as life goes on beneath the swell shrimp clicking as two whales whistle the trill of a dolphin known well Trail of a ship propeller’s swish beating in time to it’s own drum telling of speed and distance which plots a bearing under the thumb Lay below, rig the ship for dive shut the hatches and be so fleet Look alive and now take her deep make your depth one five zero feet. As silent as she comes, she goes beneath the blue of water’s sea Black steel and men of submarines sailors protecting liberty [This message has been edited by Magnus (05-29-2002 07:25 PM).] |

Wonderful Barry!!! OH!, now this one has to be your best ever!! Yes it is! I have been sitting here patiently awaiting this evenings read, your coffee is at the ready sire.. Would you like me to pour? Dolphins....oh how I love them...and the sea! My granddaughter collects anything and everything dolphin. I'm not too keen on submarines though.. being a bit claustrophobic. Yes...this is indeed your BEST! ~Hugs~ ~Somewhere in my heart I'm always |

Thank you Martie... I wish I could have added more images to it. To give it the aura of how it really was.. The plume of water and air rising into the sky about 100 feet from 12 huge air vents that let the air out of the tanks that kept the ship afloat...(ballast tanks) The incline of the ship changing from level to a down angle which helped drive the ship beneath the waters... The Officer of the Deck at the periscope watching the waters come over the ship until the ship was totally submerged and on it's way down into the depths... All of these things I experienced hundreds of times....It was always so tranquil and peaceful once the ship was submerged and on a course to who knows where.... Going in harm's way... |

Thank You Nancy....I just felt it was time for me to give you a little taste of how it was on a submarine... The mornings on the surface of the ocean with the thunder clouds rising thousands of feet into the air, many miles away... Watching the sun rise, the hues of color of the sky changing gradually to a very peaceful blue....No land in sight anywhere. Hundreds of miles out in the ocean, alone and having it all to ourselves... It was an awesome experience... And you are right...being claustrophobic had no place on a submarine... Could be and was a little cramped for 150 men to share all of that space... 425 feet long and 33 feet in diameter... 56 feet tall, weighing about 8000 tons.... A very awesome and powerful ship...with some very intimidating teeth....and claws... |

KJ....ever heard of the word "sticky bun"? NO? I didn't think so.... That was a glazed cinnamon roll, fresh out of the oven, baked during the "Midwatch" from Midnight until six in the A.M. Always was a treat getting a big plate full of them brought up to the "Control Room" where the ship was driven from....That and and cup of coffee....or cold milk (before we ran out of fresh milk) (about a week after sailing)....UMMMMM GOOOD!!! I always gained about 20 pounds when we went to sea. We ate extremely well, which is a well known fact of submarine life... A sailor with a full gut is a happy sailor.... |

BRAVO!!! Wow, this is wonderful, sweet friend, this somehow made me feel seasick just thinking of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, only searching for Atlantis and looking out the windows and boards on the side to find coreal reefs and paradise on the sides and the fight for saving it all from pollution! (sigh) This is a fabulous poem of the navy, sweet friend, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Barry, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

Magnificent as usual! I too, caught the auditory on this and could almost hear all the sounds. A tremendous read, thank you! ...and her crown was formed by the ice in her eyes |

Very, very well written Barry...you paid wonderful homeage. Don't think I could have been a submariner. Was a visitor on one or two when in the Navy and that was enough. Beside, I can't swim and being on the surface is close enough to the depths for me (ha!). Enjoyed this much. jwesley |

Unfortunately...we had no windows, and the only way you could see outside...was through the periscope if there was an opportunity to get some "periscope liberty"...Wasn't a very good view though....Usually, all you could see was just more water around you and occasionally, a ship...but not often. Thank You Noah....and I did get seasick a couple of times when we were beneath some very rough seas above us in the middle of a hurricane...(many many years ago).... |

icequeen....The auditory images could be taken even further....The sound of rain above us was like a hissing noise...you could hear the rain squalls on sonar and know where they were and how far away.. We often times had carpenter fish around us.. You will probably guess what they sounded like.... Yep, like a bunch of carpenters hammering nails into a house being built... It was always eerie listening to the sound of a sonar ping bouncing off the hull in the water when we were playing war games with other ships... The pulse of energy was so strong that you could hear it through the hull with your ears.... That sound always will stay in my mind, reminding me of the days of WWII when they sat there waiting for the next depth charges to rain down on them....hearing the sonar pings....and the sound of the depth charge dropping into the water prior to the most powerful explosion a man could ever hear with his ears, through water... Sound is magnified about five times greather when through water than through air... Now I am rambling....sorry... |

Sorry...I KNOW STICKY BUNS...because I've MADE THEM....from SCRATCH.... just who do you think you're talking to anyway, a youngster? I also bake sourdough and white bread from scratch, bake cakes from scratch, and you don't even want to ask about my pies... *Sun walks away from this post wondering whatever made Magnus think she doesn't know anything about sticky buns...sigh |

JW...thanx....one of my friends, also an EX-submariner or "BubbleHead" as the surface navy guys "skimmers" called us....HE could not swim, and they worked his butt off until he finally could....He was an outstanding submariner and is a lifelong friend... We were always a very close nit group of people....Could not help but be that way, but I am sure you already know that... Thanx Jimmy... |

I know!! STICKY BUNS!!! Barry, women who cook are hot. Or so I'm told. *ROFL* |

Interloper, yes....subs have been called "boats" for many years.... You won't offend them, unless they ride "ships" and you call them a "Skimmer"!!! |

Iron nerve too.. You mesmerized me here.. . This one progressed so slowly and elegantly seemed as if the sub was a dolphin. Really enjoyed this view of you poet!I know all about them sticky buns. I once told my mom..(being that my father was a Navy man)..that I wanted to be a cocktail waitress on a submarine..she didn't find that funny. Sincerely, Reg |
