In The Kokapelli's Song

Upon entering, every eye is on you but , then, they all shift downward.
Some peruse the floorboards intently (looking for animated dust bunnies?),
and others become suddenly meticulous with the cleanliness of their hands.
You find yourself compelled to act according to their unwritten rules,
becoming entirely too concerned with a piece of lint upon your shirt.

You steal glances now and then, never directly holding their stare.
Forming in your mind, what you imagine to be their tragic story.
One woman (girl is probably more fitting...she is 19 tops)
casts uneasy eyes around the room, never resting them on anything.
Your heart drops as you recall the insecurity behind it.

Pushing your fears  aside of disquieting any of them further,
you raise your eye, regarding each one in turn, drinking in their faces
in the same manner that they do the floor, walls, their hands... nothing.
Again your gaze falls upon the (yes definitely but a girl), in the corner.
Frowning slightly, you take in the baseball cap pulled low over her face.

You wonder which it is, a black eye (maybe two), or a telltale gash.
Purposely, you avert your eyes elsewhere, observing another lady.
She is much older than the first, and looks tired and weary -
as if the burden of waking up each morning is too much to bare.
In her mind it probably is. One morning she probably won't.

You can't help it and your eyes return , again, to the young girl.
She drops her eyes quickly, apologetically, almost embaressed.
You drop your own, but only to give her the personal space.
Fiddling with the snap on your coat, you can't help but wonder
if she will ever break free, or if she'll become the tired old lady.

Your mind wanders further, asking yourself the same question.
Someone bumps you from behind, bringing you out of your query
and bringing a sharp pain to your shoulder, where the burn is.
The young girl, (she must have sidled over to you as you pondered).
She mumbles her apology, eyes cast downward in ignominy.

Smiling, you take her hand in a show of acceptance (and gratitude)
and with the other you remove the baseball cap, and hand it to her.
She looks at you with shocked, indignant eyes, but does not move
to replace the cap, her feeble attempt to cover the badge she wears.
You leave her with that cognate sense, and maybe even a little strength.

As you turn from her, the tags jingle beneath your dress.
You touch them, a smile crossing your lips, and love filling your heart.
You are one of the lucky ones....

Listening to every heart

I am not sure where this poem comes from or where its going, after several reads, I can only guess that everyone involved in the write is in a hospital cancer center?  A little insight would be wonderful...thank you...
