What do you do
when the midnight sun
strikes you?
I remember asking
the sourdoughs
that silly question
six years ago.
Now I know.
You stay up all night
and fight
the mosquitoes
that bite.
And you clean house
and garden
and work on
your plumbing.
The pipes,
that is,
that froze in November
and thawed in April
and upchucked
everything
in May.
And you smile
a lot,
at the robins
at play,
and cherish
the long day.
That's what you do,
when the midnight sun
comes out to play.
Unless of course,
you read poetry
all night long
and hope the next day
your circadian rhythm
re-adjusts itself.
Still wanna come
to the Arctic
and play?

Thanks for letting me be so silly tonight.

(giggles in delight) Oh Kacy, I just love it when you write like this, sweet friend, sometimes I find the words that just fall from the sky are some of the best words to use of all and you always make such enchantment come alive when your aurora borealis of inspiration lights these pages! (kiss on cheek) This is delightful, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kacy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Ooo "fall out of the sky of you." Now THAT'S tasty verse. Oh right ... and the poem above was fun, too.

She said burn ... together.

Thanks, and your replies all made me smile and laugh even though my eyes only want to cry today. Maybe all the playful silliness is what helps us do more than just survive?

Kacy...this was a sweet, playful poem.

Are you always an insomniac?

I am crying too!  Trying to read poetry and reply, but the words are getting stuck in my tears...so maybe I'll try again later.

Lyra,

Duncan, what a great Q! What's your answer to that one? I heard an owl a week ago. He was really sassy!

I wanna come and sit with you
I wanna see the Midnightsun too
But in cleaning? Nah that won't do
I'll just sit with my arm around you

Want all to know this summer will be a strangely beautiful astronomical event;
as there
will appear
besides the southern sun by day,
a midnitesun shine by night.
Coloradans never saw anything like it!

Titia and Martie, that sounds like some sisterly fun, especially if we can have a pillow fight too!

Jaime, my starlight, the Rockies will rock
and the skies will flash brilliant rainbow dancing lights, and then envelope you in a  golden moonbeam.

HAHA, Dave, you are a card! Don't you like freezer buns?

Vandana, thanks, it's always good to have a visit from you.

Martin, thanks for that reply. I do have some fun with the dynamics of seasonal Alaska.

OK Kaile, you might get away with that for one day. But then I think you would break down and join the crazies, maybe even run the Midnight Sun Fun run, a 5/10K run at night. Hundreds enter, and nobody goes to sleep before 4AM that night, if they even bother at all. I don't intend to sleep at all my last two nights here in Alaska. Not a wink.

thanks for sharing this tale...

yup, i think it's amazing the things one would do under the influence of peer pressure..i woke up early at 6am last Sunday to join the Big Walk, a 10km walk with my friends despite my protests that i need my beauty sleep...

the sun was unbearable, my feet were killing me but it was nice to be part of a community of crazies...

good luck on your move, btw

Kaile, are you sure that wasn't beer pressure instead of peer pressure? As you can tell, the midnightsun is already burning my brain.

Is it true that the mosquitos are as big as a whooping crane up there??? There is such a strange and mystic beauty about the place that can't be totally explained but you have touched on some quaint points of familiarity here....very nicely done! I don't think I want to go but I do want to get my.."circadian rhythm to re-adjust itself." Then beware!      I miight be able to brave the wild and free north!!
Have a nice day!

Eric, ROTFL, that was a funny reply. The mosquito is jokingly referred to as the Alaska state bird in tourist brochures. I'm happy to say the crane is somewhat larger. But not by much.
