On Princes and Ponds Today my closest friend and I walked around Carmen lake. It was ripe with springtime life – goslings and their hissing parents, dancing dragonflies, redwing blackbirds guarding nests, and cattails burgeoning. We used to stroll like this, but since I’ve moved away, it’s a missed treat. We speak of men. We always speak of men - whether we made the right choices; picking out flaws we would have erased like stick figure imperfections in pencil. We wonder too, about the one that got away. On a foot bridge, there was a young girl fishing. As we walked by, she caught something; I moved to get a closer look. She’d hooked a huge frog. It flung itself wildly away from the line. My friend tried to lure me away, but the girl seemed helpless, so I reached in, took hold of the taut nylon, pulled the frog in. Once he was in my left hand, he didn’t struggle. The hook had snared though both sides of his mouth and as I gently pulled, the barb resisted. One last tug, and it came away. I set him down, he splashed back into the pond. My friend commented that I should have taken my chances and kissed the damn frog. © 2002 Corinne Bailey [This message has been edited by Corinne (05-12-2002 07:27 PM).] |

You do make me laugh! And where in the world but at Passions would I come across the word goslings twice in two days? ROTF...thanks for this, Corinne! I needed it more than I knew! |

Wonderful! I like the way you describe your talks with your friend, how you are able to express your doubts to one another. |

I must confide that it never worked for ME...but like your friend? I always figured, "What the hell?" This is funny, but the friendship is apparent throughout. A joy to read you this morning, Corinne! |

~grin~ but this is cynical too... a stroll with a ricochet ending (and a note to your kindness, reflexive or not). [This message has been edited by Elizabeth Cor (05-13-2002 11:56 PM).] |

Oh man, don't you just hate to miss the chance!! Could picture this, and enjoyed it so much! A bad day fishing is worth a frog in the pond! |

I read this a couple of days ago, but my commenting time was almost non-existent. *S* But it's worth a repeat visit... I love the ending! *S* |

Corrine, I really like this reflective stream of consciousness piece from you. I'd say that it's your best to date. I relate very much so and I loved the last stanza. I'm keeping this one~ Take care, Melissa~ "Poetry is not an opinion expressed... |

Corinne, this is wonderful and so refreshing! I think I would have probably kissed the dang thing just to see what would happen! *I'd probably end up with a bad case of warts!* Fun read dear poetess! ~Hugs~ ~Somewhere in my heart I'm always |
