Yesterday I visited an old friend.
He didn’t have a family,
so we all became his kin.
He used to be fit as a fiddle,
but now he’s old and grey,
he knows he can’t do diddle.
He told me, when he was eighty three,
he was thankful for a long life,
so he confided in me,
and talked for hours of his younger days.
He just wanted to reminisce,
of how he did them in his own way.

Yesterday, there was a vacant look in his eyes…
His last breath, filled with yesterday’s sighs…
His life was volumes of joys and concerns.
When an old man dies, a library burns.

The sigh that I heard yesterday
Was the sigh of relief from pain
I felt the burden lift from him
Now he can have peace again

Superbly written,  I could feel all of this

Sometimes the elderly just want someone to listen. Thank you all for your responses.
