On My Knees My grandson snuggled up to me His eyes were filled with sleep And sitting here upon my knee He managed yet to speak So drowsy was his little head And barely yet awake About to lay him on his bed He said, “Why do you shake?” So unprepared was I that night To sooth a child’s mind With answer’s to a dreadful plight Not even I can find I knew not how or when or why This illness came to be Or to explain to little eyes My certain destiny I would not hide or try to mask The simple honest truth From valid questions plainly asked In innocence of youth I told him that I shake because I have a strange disease That makes it sometimes hard to walk And stiffens hands and knees I told him as the weeks go by The trembling that you see Will change my life a little more As it takes hold of me Someday there’s going to be a cure And Parkinson’s will face A weapon that will soon be sure To put him in his place “Now that you understand,” I said “Look up into the sky Just one star is my Parkinson’s The rest are gifts of mine” “And you’re among the many stars That put my heart at ease Just sitting here with me like this And snuggled on my knees” Elizabeth Santos |

I have a friend who's husband suffers from this disease, and he has been through multiple surgeries...much like Michael J. Fox. There is a cure out there, Elizabeth, and miracles happen every day. It would not surprise me at all, if you turned out to be one of them... because look at the answers you have within you! |

This actually happened the other night with my grandson. The surgeries are being done on patients with advanced Parkison;s, and it is not certain the effects will last Thank you all so much for commenting. A difficult disease will be conquered within 10 years, if not sooner |

Dear Liz, this was a lovely poem, one that gave us all a little insight into your troubles, sorry to read, mostly all I see from you is your gift of words, which fills me with gratitude, hope all goes and stays well for you. Give your grandson a big hug from us all. Sincerely Rick |
