Does anyone else have this problem??? Some (most) POP UP ADS lock up my computer... freeze me up to where I have to shut down AOL. I have no mouse...no controls...I have to hit Ctrl/Alt/Delete and close out AOL and lose anything I might have been posting or working on...and then reload AOL and sign back on. Its very annoying...so are those POP UP ADS!! As soon as they pop up and begin loading Im locked up..sometimes I can X them out or close them before it happens but most times I'm done in. And some sites have 3 and 4 pop up per page... and they are huge too...off the screen somtimes. Its gotten to be so frequent that I cant go visit peoples webpages here at Passions or use many card sites or most importantly do research on line. Is it some setting on my comp or something AOL related? thanks jm (moth techno-tard) |

you use AOL? but seriously one major problem with popup ads is that they proliferate: most sites that place popups have code in the popups that opens more popups. there IS a way to get rid of popup ads permanently without outside software, but the problem is that you have to let at least one popup from each site show on your computer. then, you follow this (easy and worthwhile) procedure on your computer to permanently remove that popup server from your computer. first, right-click on the popup and select "properties." write down the domain "www.whatever.whatever" of the URL. next, open your windows "hosts" file, found as follows: in windows NT / 2000 / XP: \winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts in Win95 / 98 / Me: \windows\system32\hosts open it with notepad. enter the following at the bottom of the file: 127.0.0.1 (the domain from the popup) save the file. That's it! from now on, whenever IE tries to open a popup from that server, it will do one of those "i can't find this page" things - which takes far less in the way of resources, and saves you from having the popup open popups. unfortunately, unless you get a program to keep the popups out at all, they will still open, but here's the thing: those programs also block things like the PiP preview window. i find it easier to just edit my hosts file than put up with that. also: this prevents "unkillable" popups. -Dave, who hopes this helps. |

( not a clue) lol I have went to some of the sites that locked me up before...but went thru Netscape and sometimes could navigate succesfully...which made me wonder about the AOL connection...but since my daughters comp doesnt lock???? See ... theres no method to the madness So I was wondering if anyone else was having pop up hell... thanks again for the suggestion. |

popups have really been getting on my nerves lately - first: do they really work? you pop something up on my computer and that's a guaranteed way to get me to NOT visit your site. a nice, tactful banner? you bet, but don't pop up. second, they're getting sneaky - they pop up and then hide behind another browser, or, like Dave said, they start multiplying, or you have to wait til they load, since they're layered... argh! if you have the patience, Dave's first suggestion is a good one. there is an easier one than his second suggestion, and that's to disable Javascript in your internet options. i don't know AOL, but i think it's a modified version of INternet Explorer, so you SHOULD be able to go up to Tools -> Internet Options -> Then go to "Advanced" and find the scripting portion and disable it. the problem with this, is what Dave said - it will also disable anything javscript on other sites that you may want to enable. i doubt it has anything to do with your active x controls though. that's more along the lines of playing with media, etc. could be it's just overloading your computer...? good luck |

interesting - while that's very good, it only affects the pop ups on ail itself, not the ones you get from other sites. on a side note (seeing AOL-Time Warner reminded me) i just found out the other day that Compaq and Hewlett Packard merged... the things you learn. |

Sharon...thank you for that article... its good to know...and for the record those ads dont lock me up...they arent the same kind of pop ups like on other sites. Chris...I agree with you about the ads working in a negative way... I dont believe the ads do much to actually sell the product...I think they serve more in harrassing the site owner into paying fees and extra charges to have the annoying ads taken off their site...thats how the server generates more money from the ads ... thats my not so humble opinion anyway. Most of the time the ads are for useless things like "spy cams" and often have insulting portrayals of women as models on them...many have innuendo of porn on them. (dont get me started) LOL anyway..thanks to all for the suggestions and help. I will see what I can do to get unpopped |

Janet you know you can call an aol tech up free and he will walk you through correcting these things...or tell you what else it may be... M despite what others dislike about aol, I love it, have had it the whole time and never get frozen unless someones site is so filled with junk and music and pics etc....and I don't visit those kinds anymore..if they dont begin loading early I delete them. I freeze up mostly when someone sends me a bmp to make into a jpg and it is sooooo large... |

heh. now how about removing the popups from MSNBC? that, DeVine, was just TOOO ironic for me - that a story about a popup "relief" would be laden with popups. . o 0 (where do they come UP with this crap?) *howls with laughter* -Dave |

and on a more serious note: Christopher - yes, AOL is just a glorified IE skin. Yes, i prefer Hotbar, lol. but if you're JUST DETERMINED to use AOL instead of a REAL internet provider, anything you change in IE will affect AOL. it won't, sadly, stop it from being AOL. but it WILL stop javascripts. AdSubtract SE is also good, or if you're JUST DETERMINED to find a popup killer on your own, you can go to Cnet Downloads and search there for "popup killer." you should find MANY, MANY free programs on there to get rid of them. -Dave [edited because HyperLinking is (REALLY, REALLY)HARD] [also edited to add two notes, to be found below:] 1. the fact that your comp doesn't lock when dialed up through AOL but browsing with Netscape means it's a browser problem - have you tried updating IE? sometimes the updates can save you from things like this. (of course, sometimes they can cause it, too.) 2. i just ran face-first into a forum quirk - for some reason after i coded my hyperlink to refer to www.download.com, it was trying to append that address to this page's address and open it in a new window, which same of course didn't work. i was forced to add "http://" to the front end of the address to tap IE on the head and go "hey stupid, go here..." i wonder why? [Edited ONCE AGAIN to add the following:] a buddy of mine just pointed out the idea that it might be spyware-related. spyware is programs like Gator - you don't use Gator, do you? using Gator solely as an example - Gator hijacks your bandwidth by "gradually" downloading more and more bits of software from their servers to your computer. it installs itself, can launch programs without you even being there, and reports your internet activity to their servers. this ability allows it to also conveniently crash your computer without your prior knowledge of its even being there. Lovely, eh? Gator.com has been sued for their business practices - and they're not alone. quite a few spyware companies have been sued recently, but until someone wins big enough to put them out of business, we all have to deal with them. there is a program that's on your team: AdAware, available for free download from the Lavasoft download page. AdAware will scan your computer for known spyware products and at your request, remove them. i can't recommend it enough. -Dave [This message has been edited by NapalmsConstantlyConfused (05-29-2002 07:17 PM).] |

Pop-ups - whoever ever invented them was EVIL! Gimme banner ads any day! I personally use 2 browsers, one called Crazy Browser (www.crazybrowser.com), and another called Neoplanewt (www.neoplanet.com). CB has it's own in-built pop-up stopper (and script error suppresser and lots of cool stuff). NP has an option where it will ask you before opening ANY new windows if you wish to se eit (say no fr pop-ups, yes if you did it yourself heh). That *can* get annoying but it has so many cool skins that it's still my default browser Alternatively there's about a billion pop-up stopper programs around. Course if aaaaaall pop-ups crash your compy it might be ur compy's problem...lol But still, if ya manage to stop 'em, all's good. Angie |
