~* Love Shadow *~

I am the shadow of love
Its one dimensional companion,
Following every graceful movement
Lit by the stars

And yet, love is not part of me
It’s slightly separated,
Just a bit askew
The silhouette, not quite lined up,
The outlines never congruent

Yet I am always there
Behind, beside, in front of it
Dancing the same dance
Walking down the same street

But love is lit by the stars
And I am its shadow, a companion to
An intimate, elusive friend

It evades my yearning fingertips
Which long to grab onto the fringes of desire
But my fingers are only flat shadows
On the wall

Love can lean against the brick and touch me
And it would seem so easy to grasp
But it’s like trying to hug yourself
in the mirror
Love approaches, but I am
Just a one dimensional image
That it cannot embrace

Love beats in my heart,
Runs through my veins
Swirls through my mind
Occupies my dreams

It will only embrace me in the dark
Where I am no longer a shadow
But rather equally invisible
It is here that love will tiptoe silently
into my heart
In the darkness of my days
When I least expect
To be embraced

Elizabeth - you should do free verse more often it suits you well, and this shows how adaptable your muse is. I loved this one as the shadows of love as expressed in this poem took on so many different meanings to me anyway. I did kind of a dual diagnosis so to speak
