Dampness clung to the walls, to the floor,
Clinging to the inhabitant of cell fifty-four,
With the coming dawn she knew, she would be no more.
She wrote because she would be no more.
When I questioned the stones of her last dark night,
In their slow grinding way…
This is the tale they told;

She whispered upon an old crinkled sheet,
It’s edges curled with use.
Quill scratched paper with ink that flowed deep.
Her words brought to life the town that never sleeps…

A gust bursts forth upon the empty streets.
Rippling across the water, rustling through the leaves,
Blowing faery dust, carried by the winds,
That falls like a feather upon a sleeping cheek.
Light bursts forth upon the waking street.
The busy baker bakes, as a hungry urchin weeps.
Life bursts forth upon the bustling streets,
Hailing another day for the town that never sleeps.

…A clear drop splotches the black of her ink.
It ran down and mingled with the blood from her lips.
Thus Sorrow she painted across the busy street.
And Memories she wrote of the town that never sleeps.

These were the words the timeless stones used,
How eloquently they spoke, how beautifully she wrote.
As the life faded from the crumbling walls,
Her tale, her paper floated down to the floor…
And there it lay alive forevermore…
The tale inside of cell fifty-four.

~Welcome to Passions~

I liked your first poem which left a few questions, but that is what poetry should do, I think. Look forward to reading more.

Thanks, Hugs, Pat

Welcome to Passions. You've capture the last moments of an individual life, and painted her portrait with moving words. Well done!

I couldn't make up my mind if I heard John Houston reciting this in the style of The Hobbit or Vincent Price reciting Edgar Allen Poe...  Either way, I guess you're in good company!  Welcome, and well done.
