Listening to every heart

Bone Chill

Chill settles over mountains
When winds murmur,
Ice tinkles
In the fall of snow on snow,
Yet Konrad felt nor heard none of those sounds,
Though still the chill
Settled into his bones.

It had been two days since he woke from
His fevered nap,
Exhaustion and desperation having
Sapped his strength.

He feared he
Would once more step into
That thickening mire, depression
But he was more than stunned
That the little senorita
Had left him alone
As well as his
Wallet.

She had stood over him,
Gray eyes gone slate,
“Senor, senor,”
She had nudged his shoulder
Until he finally shivered away
The sleep, shaking the sandman’s leavings
From his mind
Like sugar from a bowl.

He left, having paid her extra
Not just for the beer,
But for the lodging,
There, in the
Cantina.

Konrad’s thoughts crowded him with
Quagmired emotions,
His limbs felt as if they were sucking
Themselves out of agonized
Quicksand…

He was exhausted, nowhere near
Belize, but he had made it to
Tampico, where its mild weather
Should have suited his inner nature,
But too much had happened,
And the chill
Was settling.

He recalled Dana’s last letter,
Wondered if he would run across
Any nutrias, or water dogs, “pico’s”
By which the area had taken its name.

He was surprised that
It had crossed his mind,
But some scent of Dana had swept
In on the sea-sprayed winds,
The cocoa trees
Bringing her to his soul
And he wondered
What she might say
If, when,
He found her again.

Would it be as in the
dreamstate,
“come home to me”?

Who knew?  The Mayans
Had their prophesies,
Quetzalcoatl,
Levels, dimensions, and their
Calendars,

Dana had followed something
Here because
She believed in so many things…

And Konrad?

He believed
In Dana.

He would skirt depression
And continue on
Toward Veracruz.

I really get lost within your words...they take me "else where".
And this is very magical.

THAT is a cool image.  Come on Konrad...where there's a woman, there's a way!
