Wordsong

A poem cannot tell you this,
no not really,
not how to catch the fading of twilight
and move it from charcoal
to the color of something that stops my heart;
it cannot say "believe" and shut off doubt
or sing the chorus of cicadas and make it a lullaby.

Yet it can bring forth
the ache of butterscotch, that speaks
of love in ways that words cannot;
can form life in the pine drenched silence
of a mountain lake, the trout-swirl
pink and meaningful as it dares the surface,
and it can play the chords of light
in my heart's trembling rainbow,
sing those notes until your heart
vibrates in tune.

A poem cannot tell you
the sweet fragrance of a cloudburst
in the heat of summer,
but it brings you to that moment
when the storm tang fills a hesitating wind,
the tumbling suspense as one leaf falls,
still wet and green, out of a sunlit sky;
it will not be content to speak of rain then,
nor describe the jewel captured still trembling
within the nasturtium's leaf when it is through,
no, it will catch that silver sparkle, wrap it
in the sound of droplets falling into waves of grass,
and save that scintillating vision for all time.

Can it describe the hand that rests, warm and comfortable
within the curve of a long loving couple,
or the look that years can bring to understanding?
That, and more; it can place that hand so gently,
finger tip by finger tip, upon your hand, that for a moment
you are one with them, the warmth of their shared breath
joining with yours, their peaceful joy a treasure of your own.

A poem yes, can take this sunlit sky all blue and joyful
and translate it with the eyes of heart
into a photograph of something diaphanous
that moves through the trees like wind;
and where the shadows play the power lays,
just a tremble in the curtain
waiting in wish of tender certain through the sliding door
like harp of smile, it can sing across the miles
and turn words into a shiver on a shoulder all alone

until the poem you're reading feels more like coming home.

I felt I had come home in the reading of this. It was seamless in its presentation.

Well Martie, folks are calling for more -- I'm game, are you?

This was my first Duet as you know, and I really enjoyed it. So, I'd be honored if you'd grant me the pleasure of another dance.....

I read this quickly right after it was posted... and in that moment, it became a heart favorite. *S* Several readings later, I still find I'm lacking the words to do it justice... so I'll just say I loved it from the title through the last word... a poem from the pen of such masters is indeed coming home. *S* Beautiful, seamless collaboration!!

Hope you don't mind if I steal this away and lock it in my little box of favorite things.... No, that would be selfish, and it so deserves to be shared. Wonderful.

How did I miss this???????
I looked at the date and think it was when I was out of town back in april...
OH my...how lovely is this write of poetry and imagery..how impressive is your twos imagery and personification, and the theme youve chose...This should have been put in the book...its a poets poem.
And now the moth is wondering how she can ever hope to duet in the shadow of this superb write ...
me thinks me needs a note from me mommy...
or a doctors excuse for me muse
putting this one in me mothy library and printing one out to go on my desk.
