--Savannah Tea --
Day trippin' in an old ford escort
just me in shorts and tee
with Tammy going to
Savannah and all it's complex
Southern oddities
served with tea.

windows rolled down
papers whip around
in the back seat
as the escort engine pushes 80
the car shakes and vibrates with us

Fellow higwayers pass and follow
the coast lingers in and out
from blurring trees and start
to give way to palms
and tough palmetto bugs

Tammy's eyes behind sunglasses delight
to all the sticky heat and escape,
letting her toes catch some rays
as they dangle out the window
for onlookers to examine.

My own hands are relaxed behind the wheel
the sun burns my forearm leaning
out the window
the hairs pushed back by the gentile breeze
and the throttled speed.

The highway signs pointing south
showed new welcomings
but n'ver goodbyes or see y'all laters
just, "WELCOME"
as if they were waiting for us.

Tammy dozes off
Rays of late day sun paint her face
reds and oranges and tint her sunglasses
so that i see her gaze over to me
before she sleeps
with a smile.

I can continue the trip
I am tired but restless
to get to Savannah - we need to get there

Away from the muck and scum
that laid us in gutter pay
and cheap times.

Here i can wipe the dirt off my shoes
and it will stay off.
My face will be clean of hate
and Tammy can smile for good.

Hey hey my man.  I heard that you were around.  This makes me want to put the top down and drive off into the sun, wind ripping my glasses off, and smile all the way.  Not to mentions a lovely lady asleep at my side.  Good stuff.  And welcome aboard.
