A Tale

An old woman wishes to tell her tale
She looks at me and smiles
Wrinkles around her eyes
lips parched and dry give me pause
I place a straw between her lips
  the liquid clearly providing relief
  and temporary pleasure
She has longed strayed from youth

My energy is soaring
  with little time to listen
Too urgent is the call
for my own time to experience
Youth is a fleeting moment
As I await my time to come

We push back as far as we can
We drag our moments unwilling to let go
It works for a time until we forget
Then, without knowing we lose track
The clock awakens, it chimes in years
The mirror becomes an unfamiliar picture
framing the resemblance of a long ago relative

Suddenly, I feel her shaking hand
A desert full of wrinkled sand touches me
The flesh around her fingers thin as tissue
The veins pronounced as I hold her steady
Cool to the touch is she
I wrap her hand in mine
Giving her as much warmth as I can

I dare not look into her eyes
for she might see the moisture in mine
I concentrate on her frail hands
She tells me of her youth,
  her travels, her husband
Talk of the future becomes less important
Labored moments now are her life
and I listen
and I move closer
and I cry

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Electra, I cried reading this the first time and did so this time too, our elderly should never be left alone as they deserve our most loving attention as love and compassion is what makes them feel comfortbale and youthful in their hearts and so they can have a shoulder to cry over too! (big hugggssssss) God Bless You, sweet friend, you truly have an angelic heart, you have my vote, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Electra, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Yes...I know I voted before,
but I do want this most compassionate piece

there is so much to learn from those older and wiser than we...
I use to love to listen to my Grandfather talk about arriving in America when he was 12.

Alicethruglass,

I think you should write about your being 12 and listening to your granddad. What a splendid write it would be. Thank you for your response.

I enjoyed this poem very much, sometimes people take for granted the knowledge that can be learned from our elders. I know I love to listen to the tales older people have to tell, and it makes them so happy to share it.

Sometimes we have to follow a stronger voice, even if it's silent.
