Just before sunrise The old truck was climbing Twisted roads north of Ft Smith And she was sleeping Head against the window a jacket she had shoved In her backpack Rolled up for a pillow. Just outside of Acorn On Hwy 260 she stirred Wiped her yes and peered At the horizon gauging how much time Between now and the shots she Already had composed in her mind. “Take that road” she said and pointed left to a dirt track leading up a hardscrabble hill. We got about as far as the road was meant to go When she said, “stop here.” “Come with me” she ordered. We walked up the hill a ways racing the rise of sun Until she was satisfied. Below us was a valley. Green spring grass holding to the steep hills Seemed to be dull, until the sun in it’s rise Transformed the valley into an expanse Of green diamonds “I told you I would show you the dew.” She said with a smile. “Now, I’m hungry. Find me someplace to eat.” She said turning her back and walking to the truck. I waited a while, Watching the sunlight on grassy hills Turn from the glitter of diamonds To lush Emerald richness. “Pancakes?” I asked. “They’ll do.” She replied. “I want to get to the Quachita Mountains By this afternoon.” I drove, She cleaned lenses And talked. Later, Tripod and camera became her obsession As sunlight mixed with clouds Painting vistas below us with Patchwork shadows That lumbered in slow steps Across the afternoon. ……………………………………………… Along the verdant valley far below the ridge Along the winding highway, lies old Bowly’s bridge We used to go there swimming in the summers sun Had me one or two there when we were both too young Can you meet me there at midnight on warm summer eve Were the words promises or are they things we now must grieve You told me that you’d love me and we would find a way To make old Bowly’s our private place to play We can watch the sunrise and hear the cardinal sing Drink some campfire coffee and not think of anything Later we’ll go walking down along the banks Lose ourselves in cedar that grow in crowded ranks We’ll find the hidden hollow soft with cool green grass Rest a while in shadows as we stare at Ringman’s pass When our hearts have rested and the world has ceased its shove We’ll find ourselves in sleeping bags wrapped in our sweet love Can you whisper to me those three words we once thought were ours Can you mean them now as you once did or has the meaning soured I still travel down to Bowley’s bridge in hopes you will show Knowing in my heart and soul if you do our true love would grow Along the verdant valley far below the ridge Along the winding highway, lies old Bowly’s bridge We used to go there swimming in the summers sun Had me one or two there when we were both too young [This message has been edited by Cpat Hair (02-18-2003 12:38 PM).] |

Can't say this one makes me cry (yet) but what I like so very much is the transformation of the green spring grass turning to green diamonds from the effects of sun and dew....just sparkling!!! I like "hardscrabble hill" and "patchwork shadows", each two word descriptions which show so much.... About to get my map out to find Bowley's Bridge....smiling here.... me and most of the women here, I suspect! You'll end up with a PIP line-up.... ![]() enjoying this series.... Well, if it's fiction, you do a damn good job at it. Ever write a book? If not, you should! Cor |

![]() BRAVO!!! How I'd love to bathe in those kind of springs right now and walk barefoot on those alpine meadows just across those ridges, dear friend, they say in some places the water falls like wine but I would choose the dew any day, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ron, thank you for sharing! ![]() May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |
