Pinion & Coyote

Where hills run high
Then drop deep into
The canyon’s wide yawn
Winds slip slowly down into
Still and silent graves

But there, amid rock and shale
That tops the peak
Stands in stoop one pinion, as if in
Supplicant bow
Ne’er straightened by the sun,
Barely holding on by root

For wind was master
Shaping for all time pinion’s limbs
In grace-wrought reach

It stands solitary, for some crow
Had dropped a lone seed.,
Some rain must have nourished it
Once or twice,
Some ledge of rock caught its beginning forage
Of root to earth

On weakest of substance
Under harshest conditions
Bent and weathered
It still stands the test of time

For somewhere in the distance
As night settles into a lumbering
Slumber over
The pinion’s horizon

A coyote howls
From north, south, east
Perhaps west

And the pinion knows
They will greet each other
In dawn’s light,

Taking pleasure
In each other’s brief circle.

As surprised as I am to say this about a 'nature' poem...lol, this is one of the best poems I've read of yours Kari.  Very cool.

Dear Karilea, this one gave me goosebumps ... it goes into my library. I want to reach out and hug this Pinion .... and you for writing such a sparkling gem!
I also have written poems about trees ... I love them so!
Yours here is a masterpiece.
Love and ... hugs.
