When the ice hit I was home. The hills are steep and roads wind Like ribbons stuck the sides of incline As if designed by a committee of drunks Convinced the only way to get from here To the other side was to wend your way there first. So... I made coffee, strong and hot Just before the lights went out with a crack of limb And a shower of sparks that danced slick on the ground. I just found a chair and sat looking out At the carnage nature provided to remind me Of another place and another storm. Iambe was already angry when I came in that night Off of slick roads and a two day trip over towards The panhandle, where I had dropped a load of steers Then waited to haul another back. Somehow, all that had every been wrong between us Was on the tip of her mind like the part of an iceberg That shows above the water with the rest laying somewhere below Just waiting to gouge holes in anything that gets too close. I think I said something meant to comfort And heard in return the first sounds of the bottom Being raked. Being a bit slow I asked if it was this bad why did we stay together Hoping she would say she loved me Not realizing she would tell me that her saying that Meant I was asking her again to give and follow Some devious pattern of manipulation It was too cold they said for ice… But it came anyway in sheets of drizzled rain That clung to limbs, adding weight that eventually Caused things to break. I looked at it out that window in Arkansas Sipping now tepid coffee and feeling the chill creep And remembered I never heard those three words and poured myself one straight I'd had enough ice. Cpat Hair - three words that mean so much, yet it amazes me when it's not heard from one. I wonder at times why, and if the other party doesn't really know what those words can mean to someone... BC |

Found the iceberg reference so revealing of her, and of him.... Interesting relationship. You give much for me to mull over, and a lot of my own memories seem to surface when I read you. Even what those three words ~really~ mean. Enjoyed, Hugs, Pat ![]() ..without surrender, be on good terms with all persons.. |

Think I would like it straight as well, too much ice in my past.... I loved this on many levels... Susan |
