This buried secret has not been entirely silent, for decades it has murmured in a voice too soft to capture; a sleeping generic trick cloaked by youth’s strong shelter. The day arrived for awareness, it visited our elders, whose tongues chose to wrap into clandestine twists - creating secrets within a secret. Time ticked, slowly brought the core to surface, as bodies gave in to hearts missing parts. Blood coursed backwards, as if to say: this secret has backfired. © 2003 Core Note: My mother and uncle recently revealed they share a genetic heart defect. Both have known for years, but neither told the other until it my son began to excel in track-and-field. The guilt was driving me mum crazy (she envisioned him dropping dead on the track). Both of my kids will be tested in a couple of weeks. A normal human heart has 3 aortic valves, with this defect, there are only 2. And no, I haven't bothered to find out if I'm affected, yet. |

Corinne...Although I was glad for the explanation...your poem spoke also. I'm so glad that you know this...knowledge is power. I hope all is well with you and your boys. |
