Fires in the Sky It’s not what I would choose to see, these fires in the sky That blast the soul of Baghdad leaving terror in the eye But terror is the enemy, and terror the defense When taking eye for waking eye that harbors turbulence The desert sands have turned to dust as tanks are rolling through And hearts are pounding rhythms of the bold red, white and blue An army’s moving forward in the coolness of the night To take a tooth for tooth before the tiger shows it’s might And thousands are the loyal ones and thousands do not trust The one whose being sought by men through clouds of desert dust Whenever sands havesettled down and roaring fires tamed A new regime will rise above an old familiar name It’s not what I would choose to see, these fires in the sky But visions of the falling towers dwell within my eye And so I praise the soldier who is riding through the dust Toward terrorism's weapons hoarded by the most unjust It’s what I always hoped to see, a countryman take flight And turn his back from power in the middle of the night A humble soul with gun in hand and fear within his heart Whose values do not match the war of which he is a part It’s not what I had hoped to see, these bombs that blast the night But what I pray is that they bring a better, brighter light If freedom is the consequence, and war a short refrain Then every soldier will have honored every fallen name Elizabeth Santos |

![]() (tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Elizabeth, it is so very saddening to see this war happen, dearest friend, I think of all the innocent in Iraq and I wish we could just rid of the wepaons without having to bomb the city! (sad sigh) I pray this war ends as soon as possible and then we can get to peace and never think of war again, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Elizabeth, thank you for sharing! ![]() May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |

Not an easy write, I am sure, but stirring, and heartfelt... Thank you, Lady Santos... |

I have been unable to watch since A-day. The destruction was simply too much for me. An incredible, and disturbing write. Exceptionally penned. |

Liz, this is a beautiful poem about a subject none of us wanted to see. But, it's also a great tribute to the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who are fighting for our Red, White, and Blue. Thank you for this, dear friend. Heart Hugs, Ethel |
