The distance through a pane of glass-- brightly colored uniforms and guards with guns-- bored with the norm as my father grayed again. Not the picture of his son-- not the frame he had in mind-- finally-- peace offering-- my brother's fate some other man's. He told me that the telephone had so little cord-- he couldn't meet Dad's eyes to speak and was grateful for reprieve... but both knew that their cheeks were wet. Two men crying where tears condemned-- signs of weakness in this life-- the smell of blood to carrion-- they wept and didn't give a damn. "I'm sorry" should have shattered glass-- not a howling of past, but simple love with such regret-- my brother--sentenced on that day to a life of self-despise for pain he saw in our Dad's eyes. He watched our father walk that way he had, with quiet dignity. He said our father's shoulders slooped (that never did quite go away...) Worse than gavel from a judge. My brother said he was sentenced knowing that he had done this-- and lived, then died, in shame. I pray they are together now and found in death what life did not-- offering a pardon, please? Tell me there is grace... [This message has been edited by serenity blaze (03-22-2003 12:24 PM).] |

K - just when I think I have you all figured out you go throwing another one at me - this is sad - but beautiful and here: My brother said he was sentenced knowing that he had done this-- and lived, then died, in shame. I can never see him being anything other than amazing . . this was amazing - the cord line . . . goodness your imagery is amazing - I see what you mean . . . xxoo [This message has been edited by littlewing (03-22-2003 03:51 AM).] |

There was this spirit of knowing... Those who did go, and those who chose not to... Sending a hug. What incredible insight here...am dumbstruck. Smiles from TD |

Bill--you are always so good to me...I'd love to hear you play, by the way, if you have anything? Would you send? Or you can just come serenade me outside of my window. (It's okay..the neighbors won't mind, it happens all the time... ) love you, m'friend. Sue? My family has so many stories, that some days, I feel like I'm not really a poet, but a reporter. James, thank you lovie. You have been doing alot of nice writing yourself. I appreciate you taking the time to read and reply. Linda, the pain of that time in our lives was just...well, if there are words for it, maybe I'll write something else...sighs, grins, and hugs. TD...sometimes I write things and don't see the possible layers others might read in them...I'm just grateful to strike an occasional chord. So thank you very much my friend. And to all, this is from some prose I've been working on, based on my family's story. This is actually more true to the actual event than my story--my brother did indeed serve a sentence in Huntsville State Pen (he got busted "running pot" across the Mexican border in the early 80's--OH. Twice. Dumb move.) He told me many stories about his stay there, but this is the one that always brought us both to tears. My father's visit. My Dad never talked about it. But my brother said he would have tripled his sentence to take back that moment. They have both passed on, and I hope that somehow they found some peace. Thanks for letting me "vent" once again, my good poet friends. Some people think that poetry should be reserved for hearts and flowers, but in a different sort of way, this actually is. This IS my heart, and my flowers for them. Love to all. |

(big hugggssssssss) There is grace, but the best of it comes in peaceful resolve and I pray this war can end soon so we can feel it! (sad sigh) This is a very sympathetic poem, dearest friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karen, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "Underneath your clothes there's an endless story..." |
