Dream House

I cannot get out:
The elevators go up
To floor upon floor
And into basements,

But no floor high or low
Leads to the outside.

There are many stairs
Going up and going down
With gaping chasms,
Splintered broken treads,

That no one short or tall
Can negotiate.

Some staircases end
In broken rungs of ladders
Leading to attics,
Dark and unexplored,

And I know that they are
Better left alone.

Alone as I am,
In the stillness and shadows
Going up and down,
Trying to escape.

Though I cannot get out:
I will not give up.

not so lightly to be caught
