Son,
you asked me why....
Why is there war?

I looked into those questioning
blue eyes surrounded by
freckles and worry.

Thinking silently, yet with that
fatherly mask that doesn’t tell
him of my fears and worries.

Why son...I guess you could say
we have wars because we are human
and humans sometime fear others,
sometimes feel the need for safety,
security and survival...
...Sometimes more...

More?
Again with that quizzical
look, but with less worry.
Why more?

Because son,
sometimes people feel they
must have more, must have the grass on
the other side of the fence....

And they will do anything to get that
greener grass....Greed and lust
cause many wars.

Dad, are there winners in wars?

No son,
just those that lose less...
No one wins in war...

Admire the way you did this with such a serene style.I remember my dad who was a world war two vet telling me as a kid that war was stupid and nobody comes out a winner.Just got off the phone with with my grown son and tryed doing the same with him yet let him have his own opinion and learn this for himself...good write.

Live like it's your last day...

Sometimes we don't even realize when we're there,  on the green side of the grass!

Good thoughts Barry~

Good to see you, what a wonderful poem.  This is so very, very true...

Dad, are there winners in wars?

No son,
just those that lose less...
No one wins in war...

Excellent work... and yes, I'd imagine there are a lot of young faces seeking reassurance... a lot of older ones, too. *S*

wow, there is not much harder than telling a child the 'truth' about the world they're growing up in...  It's difficult to tell them what's going on without depriving them of sleep for the next decade, and I think you did it wisely...

good job!

This is a fine answer to the question many ask ...in every generation.  Well written!  Ken J

Saluting...
There is no greater tribute to the truth, than what is given to the children...
For even in the sadness and waste of war, there is true courage, commitment and genuine love.
Made me cry maestro!  Thanks, TD
